Spyderco Tour/Visit the Factory?

#1

Post by mmtmatrix »

Hello,

I am new to the Spyderco forum (but not to Bladeforums and Spyderco's) I live in CO and was wondering if it is a possibility to go to the Spyderco Factory in Golden, CO? Is there a tour that can be taken? Is there a Spyderco Factory store? (do they have every Spyderco's)? Any discounted prices? I would love to see it, and possibly meet Sal. Is any of this possible? Also what hours/times is it open (over the next few weeks maybe)?

Also for one of my Christmas Gifts I received the 204, this sharpener is AWESOME!!! I have been and will to continue to promote it as the best sharpener at my place of employment, A knife store (believe it or not) I spent the day working on it and sharpening different things around the house.

(Like other people have said, Sal you should consider a Career in acting) I have a few questions on it though:

If a knife is already sharp is it best to start part way through the 4 steeps (maybe on a finer stone) or is it best to just go through the complete process of sharpening regularly? (maybe with fewer strokes in the beginning)? Also is there any recent news on producing coarser or diamond grit stones for the 204? (not that I really need them just curious)

Thanks again, I have learned so much from you all on the Spyderco forum on BF and hope to continue to here. Thanks again for all the help so far,

One more thing Sal, do you think if I go down there I got maybe see the Illusive Spyderco Balisong??? I could bring something (a Bali) to pay homage/tribute to become worthy to see you collection Sal and the spydie bali. Also do you think I could see you Balisong collection Sal??? (I hear you have a few)

Hi Mmtmatrix. Welcome to the Spyderco forum.

At this time we do not have formal tours of the plant in Golden. Although we are thinking about.

We do have a factory outlet store. Usually selection is very good alhtough the store does not get more than "it's share" of new items. Not fair to our dealers to hog the new stuff.

Prices on most items will be slightly discounted. We do have some discontinued items at lower prices.

I'm usually pretty busy and often travelling so it's difficult to tell if I'm available. Depends on time.

If you're close and like our products, the store is any interesting place to visit. Good knowledgable friendly crew.

There is no Spyderco Bali-song. only some sketches. No decisions to more though. They are illegal in Colorado at this time.

My own collection is not on display yet. one day.

Thanks for the reply Sal, So if I stop buy is there more to do than just go to the factory store? What about an unofficial tour? I would LOVE to do something more...

Please let me know on options, etc.

Sal, are you absolutely sure of the legality of Balisongs in CO? I know several respectable shops that sell them with no problem (that's where I have acquired some of mine). I believe it is legal to purchase, etc., them but not to carry (at least concealed) on your person.

But any way I would love to see anything at the factory and meet you if possible

Also as for my question of the 204, if the blade is already somewhat sharp is it best to go through all 4 steeps or just to start part way through? (then do you just estimate where/what steep to star on)?

Thanks for all the help,

Hi Mmtmatrix.

Regarding the Bali's, we were under the impression they were considered Autos. We have seen them for sale in CO. We're going to take a look into some of the questionable models. However, manufacture may have different rules.

I'll be happy to meet with you, if I around. the tour would depend on who was here at the time you are here.

Regarding the 204. I ususally use step 3 (white stone corner). I usually don't let my blades get so dull as to need the coarser stone.
