Question for Sal

#1

Post by Guntaholic »

First off my compliments to you on the Gunting, it is an incredible knife. It's also the first Spyderco I have owned. I was mislead lead in the past about the quality of your products by my local knife shop. They were and are as wrong as can be, and I refuse to shop there again. My question is, I have noticed when talking about the prototypes for the MBC line, you say you must take into account how well this knife will sell before it goes in to production. I can easily understand this, but am curious just how many units would you have to estimate you would sell before going ahead with production? Thanks

Hi Guntaholic. Welcome to the Spyderco forum. Sorry you were mislead about our product quality...we generally try to undersell and overdeliver.

Tooling up for a new model could cost from $12,000 to $80,000 depending on the model and materials. We really don't like to even try a new model unless we know that we can sell 2,000 or more pieces from the tooling.

Sal,

Does that mean u will make more Carbon Fiber Civilians, I already have three plainedged ones on order. Now could u make some plainedged with G-10 too. Also the green g-10 and blue g-10 too. Those would be real collectable. I would buy at least 5.

Hi Liong. Probably not. We normally don't make models for collection, mostly for hard use. We will occassionally make a collector piece because the collectors request it, but making many is difficult.
