I prefer the Calypso Jr. over other Spyderco knives it's size because I think the wider, flat ground blade is quite a bit sturdier and has great cutting geometry. Contrary to what some people think ( no offense intended) I think that G-10 would make a great handle material for the Calypso jr. However I think Micarta or Almite would be the ultimate choice. I also think that ZDP-189 should be the standard blade steel that they use for it for the foreseeable future.
I also think that whenever the Great Spyder Factory wants to introduce a new blade steel like they just recently did with ZDP-189 I think the Calypso Jr is the PERFECT knife to implement a new blade steel.
One of my very biggest wishes is for it's big Brother the C-54 big Calypso to make a major comeback. With what all is known about it at this time I truly think it would be a "Barnburner" the second go around :spyder:

Agree! Think about it...a 1200 piece burgundy zdp-189 run of the zarge calypso would sell out in no time. I expect half the people who have the small one will immediately buy the large one!

I know emotions are running high on this issue, but I say it should have a depleted uranium handle... Seriously, I like the idea of turning it into a "US Penknife" with a G-10 handle and wire clip, except I hope it will be VG10. I'm tired of all the G-10 handle knives only being available in S30V. Also, I'm affraid the ZDP189 would make it too expensive.
spydutch wrote:Well, since the Calypso Jr is one of the classics I don't own or haven't handled yet, I ordered one( a FRN handled one) despite my budget. I hear so much raving about it, that I want to try one out. Just one question: Is the clip really that bad?
I would very much like a G10 CJ in serrated H1 steel, adjustable pivot and a sturdy clip.
Spydutch, I'm still using one of the original black FRN Calypso Jr's with the identical clip and the clip is still nice and tight. I wouldn't worry about the hole. As Deacon mentioned above, this isn't the only model with the hole.
:spyder: Anything as long as I can carry tip-up possible. All my caly jr.s get put on loose rear pocket carry (strong side) since all of my training drills (and thus my carry knives) are for tip up. :o :spyder:

Not gonna let this one die yet! Since this knife has already secured collector status, I agree a CF version is called for as well. I would personally prefer the more user friendly grippy CF handle ala the CF millie sprint run.

Thank you (and Deacon of course) , I'm more reassured now. When things go well, I'll receive my first Caly jr FRN tomorrow :D . Maybe after handling it, I might come up with some other ideas for future Caly's.
Been carrying the Caly Jr. for more than 6 months and the only improvement I would do is add half an inch to the blade so the handle will stop rubbing against stuff I cut like apples and tomatoes.
It is supposed to be a EDC, so I don't really see why it should be all ss bolsters, g-10 or made put of fancy stuff. It is supposed to be the only slicer-beater on the market in a world of cutter-beater....
My two cents.
