you gotta try a full sized flat light Rick, if you haven't. For me it was like going from a Buck 110 to a Pacific Salt. Much more comfortable to carry with similar performance to a pd36r.

I know! I've seen a few from multiple companies that have caught my attention (Olight, Fenix, Nitecore) but for some reason I just love the "regular" style lights. I'll pull the trigger eventually.

Fantastic!!! Can you please do some night shots?? So interested in how clear that beam really is. I'm not the biggest fan of cool white lighting, especially the ones that cast a green tint. This looks great in a few of the videos I watched the past couple days.

I don’t know if my iPhone 16E camera does it justice. The bean is very nice. Cool white that is crisp. I would say easier to see than my PD36R, especially on the lower settings.

The medium setting at 120 lumen was great. Was easy to see anywhere in the backyard and would have great battery life. Seems like a winner for me.
The grip is very comfortable and the buttons have a nice tactile feel to them, no squish or play. Seems like the back tail switch goes right to high mode from what I can tell.

The hotspot is still pretty large, just a bit smaller than the Baton 4. Good amount of spill



It can try to do some other comparison shots tomorrow.

Thanks for the feedback! I've had the PD36R as well, so nice to hear that. I'm probably another beer or two away from ordering one myself while watching the NFL draft tonight. I'll tell my wife to yell at you when she sees that $100 charge. Haha!!

The fact it's about 1/3 the thickness and has enough power I'd have to point out which is which in the beam picture sure is something, huh?

I'm never going back to inch thick tube lights for pocket carry.

The Nitecore, for me, is thin and light enough I stopped carrying keychain lights because this one is so comfortable to carry every day. It's a full powered flashlight like the PD36R that carries as well as a AAA light for me because it's so thin.

If you haven't tried one of the flat flashlights out there you really should.

The only thing you're really giving up is battery life. I can still go 1/3-1/2 a year between charges with the Nitecore though, which is good enough for me. I never fully drain it between charges either, I charge when it's down to about 25%.

I know the 36R Pro added a second tail end button like the Nitecore, but comparing the UI between this version and the Nitecore is a joke.

I could never go back to fumbling with a second side mounted button to cycle modes.

On the nitecore there is a dedicated button to access the highest brightness or strobe without fiddling with anything else. The other button half pressed lets you instantly access the lowest mode - full press and you're on whatever main setting you used last, quick taps to cycle through.

It's a much better tactical light UI than the Fenix.

The new Olight ArkPro Ultra has REALLY been tempting me to be my first flat flashlight...but I'm also really tempted by the Baton Ultra as well. I'm admittedly a sucker for a little more throw.

@RugerNurse - Have you decided between the Pro and Ultra yet, which one is the keeper!?

Sadly I returned both the baton ultra and pro. I really wanted to like the ultra version but it was too much of a thrower light for me. The hot spot was nice but that’s all you got, not enough spill as I wanted. I prefer a combo beam for daily tasks.
The regular baton 4 is mostly used for moonlight mode around the house in the morning so it wasn’t worth the upgrade. I’m currently eyeing the PD26R ACE.

My favorite aspect of my chosen Olight model is the magnetic back end. I've only had to stick it to a hood to work on an engine once. But it was welcome.

When I heard Fenix made a flat light I really wanted to try it, since I've been using their products for 20 years. However I'm dead set on tail end switches for my larger lights. It does look nice though.

I'm pretty sure the PD26R ACE is also more of a throwy beam. Seems to have a tight hot spot and throws 353 meters. Check out some videos on the LD30. Nice floody beam, pretty small in pocket. If it appeals to you, shoot me a PM.

I was encouraged by a short review of the 26R ACE where it looked like it had decent spill as welll


I know they have a new LD30 Renegade model which might be what I’m looking for.
I like Fenix lights as well because they typically don’t have a magnetic tailcap.
