Anodized my NAND and oxidized my screws

#1

Post by Pengubandit »

I was getting a little bored with the plain titanium look of my nand so I did a fishscale (blue to yellow/ green) gradient to my NAND. Had previously done something similar to my Ti Demko and was happy with the results. The stonewash texture underneath looks great with the color.

It was pretty easy with a 48vdc power supply at 1A and a baking soda jar. I started fully submerged and started slowly pulling it out as it turned blue. Screws i just heated on my glass cooktop at full power until they were yellow/ tan then i just dunked them in a bowl of water.

Looks good, interested to hear how the baking soda method holds up. Always wanted to try my hand at it but haven't the acids usually recommended

No, steel doesnt respond the same way as titanium, this method only works for Ti sadly. You can color change steel with heat, a torch, oven or hot plate work of depending on temps/colors you're targeting. Check out Clickspring on YouTube on how to blue steel really well.

Don't judge the mess too much but here's the setup. Powe supply, some cables. Little bit of titanium wire and an old pasta sauce jar. You dont need a fancy power supply, you could even do it with a bunch of 9v batteries in series. The solution is just a tablespoon of baking soda and distilled water, ive used tap water before and it's fine.

See the charts below for achievable colors. Polished surfaces work best.
Steel Heat = Color

Titanium Votage = Color

That is really cool thanks for the detailed reply, Is this just a hobby?

The reason I ask is years ago when I was an Automotive Tech, the rolling carts we used looked allot worse than your work area which to me means frequent use.

It made your presentation totaly real and relatable, great work by the way I'll bet Sal likes it.

Haha, yeah very infrequent use. Once every couple of months maybe.

Someday I might turn it into a semi-profession but for now I'm experimenting, modding/customizing and learning.

I have several Titanium knives a CF and Titanium Knifeworks Spyderco Military Exclusive in S90V comes to mind.

Right now getting ready to do some ferric chloride acid wash and stone wash experiments but I have always been fascinated by anodizing.

Thank you for sharing your simple practical set up it has encouraged me to add this to my list of learning and new projects.

That looks great! If Spyderco ever needed any inspiration for a future exclusive or sprint of the NAND, this is it.

Don't worry about messing it up either Beggar, the coating is only a few nanometers thick and a quick beadblast or stonewash will take it off hundred(s) of times before it starts to affect the amount of material being removed to a noticeable amount. Sanding can do it too but I imagine that removes slightly more materialm possibly only donzens of retrys.

One thing I've noticed is that polished or shinier satin takes the color better than a more matte sandlasted finish. Sandblasted comes out a bit more dull/gray in comparison. You can also mask for color patterns like dying, but I haven't done too much of that.

I'll give a higher voltage a try soon with my Spydiechef and share that.

Buddy of mine did the anodisation on my Chef last year, it's a bit towards blurple, but more blue than purple.
