UKPK Salt Magnacut All Black

#1

Post by Doc Dan »

I am looking forward to this knife. I love, love the UKPK and this is over the top. It has black G10 in the Caribbean Bi-Directional texturing and Magnacut steel with black DLC coating. Whooo Weee!

My only hesitation is the price because of the exchange rate. But, I like that knife, a lot!

I’m excited for this release myself . I have really become fond of the UKPK after getting the Ti model . Normally a large knife guy but have been adding more smaller knives to the herd . MG2

Yeah, it looks classy. I have the Magnacut one with frn handle but that yellow is too flashy. I only wish the UKPKs were ground thinner bte like my beloved Urban in K390. Did you get a Metropolitan, Doc ? You should try one. I purchased one but that M398 steel is a PITA to sharpen. I ground mine at 17 degrees per side but it was hard work. I used diamond stones(Wicked Edge system) and in the end I discovered that the edge got some chips near the plunge grind. Waiting for one in a most forgiving steel, N690 maybe. I like N690 !

This is one of my big wants from the new reveal, but I really hope we have some time before release as I've had several devastating financial hits the past few weeks and really need a break (if I'd known the depth of what was coming, I'd have skipped my last two Spyderco purchases).

I didn't get the Metro for two reasons: 1] the exchange rate is not good enough right now, and 2] I have sworn off Italian Spyderco knives after buying several that were just terrible. I wasted my money.

I've never had a bad Golden, Japan, or Taiwan knife, so I'll stick with those.

BTW, that UKPK is a great slicer, as has been proven many times, and the actions have been very good, too.

Just checked in at Edgar Bros - £175.20 (that’s $240 US).
Wow! Just wow! :frowning-open-mouth

I think I’ll take my HH G10 scales and swap the S30V blade out of it and replace it with the salt magnacut blade if I get a hankering. Needless to say I won’t be paying that.

Obviously, as a total ukpk pervert, you will all know where I stand on this, but £175 is a bit fierce.

I messaged HH, but he didn't know when it was coming and just said to check back when able.

Still waiting on the Damaukpk; I periodically harass Sal about it, and he reassures me it's definitely on the to-do list. God knows what that will be priced at, but I will be buying 2 anyway.

The UKPK reminds me of a Stretch without a lock and looks thinner. So I say it's just a stretch varient.

No, it is a Caly variant.

Love the UKPK, it might be the most perfect Spyderco? It's a great mix of ergonomics, blade geometry, and for me has always held a "folding mule" quality by offering so many steels in the most affordable platform. Pretty sure I own 7 of them now.

Was super excited to see this in the reveal until I got on a couple vendor sites and was shocked by the street price. If you'd asked me a couple months ago what a g10 rex 121 variant would likely retail for I would have ballparked it around $170. I get that we're doing tremendous very strong economy by making everything more expensive across the board, that milling the scales adds cost, and dlc on magnacut is a nice touch that also adds to the overall price. For me though I just can't justify the cost. I paid $90 last year for a Spy27 g10. While this variant is incredibly cool, it just isn't twice the knife in my world.

Actually, the UKPK was first, and the Caly was a variation of the UKPK with a lock...

"The UKPK design was created by British forumites and the lockback version was prompted by forumites and knowledgable dealers wanting a locking version of the UKPK." -Sal

See history:
https://www.spydiewiki.com/index.php?title=C113_Caly3

The Stretch is a whole other beast, designed as an outdoors and hunting knife. But I agree, the drop point versions of both have a visual resemblance.

I am a big fan of the UKPK, and the new black version also caught my eye. I plan to get one if the price is right.

Are you looking at the blades or the handles? The handle on the Stretch is clearly different vs the UKPK/Caly, just look at the butt shape. The blade shapes happen to be similar between that particular Stretch and that particular UKPK, but they are not universal to either model (there are skinner style and straight spine Stretch variants, and skinner style and leaf style UKPK variants).

It is well documented that it is in the Caly family, right from the source himself.

The UKPK Salt has become one of my favorite knives. However, the price for the G10 version makes it a no-go to me for a slipjoint. Guess I'll stick to the FRN version, if I ever decide to pick up a Magnacut UKPK Salt.
