Old school , prefer Micarta and some G10 . Dream scales at the moment would be something in a hard wood . MG2

Re: What Type of Scales Do You Prefer Poll
I had to vote Other because my favorite is specifically 3D machined titanium scales, and then in general just 3D machined scales of other materials. An example (and my actual favorite) is Strider's Gunner Grip.

Re: What Type of Scales Do You Prefer Poll
I voted other. I really like wood scales. I know that natural materials have their own intrinsic issues when compared to composite materials, so I'm not expecting many Spydercos with wooden scales. But wood is so varied and so beautiful. I do wish more Spydercos came with full steel liners so you can put on wood scales if you choose.
Re: What Type of Scales Do You Prefer Poll
I like FRN and aluminum for weight savings in both regard. Depends on the day, I wouldn't mind some more Al options from Spyderco.
Re: What Type of Scales Do You Prefer Poll
Tough poll. I had to put FRN and Other. I have a FRN in my pocket 75% of the time and Micarta 25% of the time. I'm also really liking Tero Tuf scales.

Wow! Keep up the good work.
Sal, the man himself, is watching.
Your chance to sound off
and influence the future of Spyderco.
In my own case, what got me wondering
was a big G10 knife I recently acquired.
(I have to confess that I do not have a Micarta
and failed to appreciate the distinction.)
The new to me G10 Manix won bidding on eBay
promptly wore a hole in my favorite trousers.
So I reverted to my BladeHQ special edition
Yojimbo 2 that had smooth G10 scales.
When I bought the Yojimbo 2
I didn't really notice the scales
because I did not buy it for EDC.
I bought it to compare to the Terzuola Starmate
and show the change that had taken place
in martial arts thinking over the decades.
But now I have grown to like the smooth G10 a lot
and the Yojimbo 2 has become my EDC.
(And I've always been a sucker for a hollow grind.)
In smooth scales I also have
the Farid Mehr K2 in titanium,
but it is just too big to EDC for little old me.
For special occasions I will sport
the original Peter Carey smooth as glass
carbon fiber Rubicon.
Don't let me influence any of you, as if I could.
Keep voting and sounding off.
It's a free marketing survey for Sal.
Who knows what it may spawn.

Black Caribbean G10 for the classy looks and not only. Second close is the Seki frn for the tactile feel.

My favorite are the "smooth" FRN scales that are present on the UKPK. After that, standard FRN and Titanium.

Lumping G10 and Micarta together is an odd choice. Like putting pizza/sushi as one option for your favorite food.

Re: What Type of Scales Do You Prefer Poll
My three votes were for Carbon Fiber, G-10, and FRN in that order.
For Carbon Fiber, I mean full CF, preferably peel-ply. There's just a warmth to it in the hand, in addition to lightness, strength, and of course, that shimmer.
After that, I prefer G-10, as it again has a great tactile feel to it, is durable, and has an attractive look.
FRN to me is all-business: inexpensive, durable, light and with the bidirectional scales, has a great grip (I'd like to see that grip come to the Slipit line someday).

Re: What Type of Scales Do You Prefer Poll
In light of the post I just made, I find it interesting that you like the texture on the FRN UKPK scales. I can completely understand why someone would find it appealing; however, as someone on the Autism spectrum with a texture sensitivity, the texture of those scales (as well as the Metropolitan, Urban and Squeak) actually can make me physically recoil if I slide my fingers on them the wrong way.DansGearAddiction wrote: ↑Mon Feb 09, 2026 12:26 pmMy favorite are the "smooth" FRN scales that are present on the UKPK.
I was very happy to get the recent G-10 Spy27 version and am glad to see more G-10 in the pipeline for it.

I prefer smooth G10, or the Seki City FRN (as long as the clip is fully on the flat pad). I avoid metal handles because I don't like the feel.

Re: What Type of Scales Do You Prefer Poll
I'm a fan of Spyderco peel-ply G10 and G10 with the carbon fibre overlay. I have a PM 2 with the herring bone (brick layed) pattern G10 that I really like. I'm a big fan of Micarta... canvas and burlap. I'm a sucker for carbon fibre. I like titanium and aluminum if it's a textured or a blasted finsh. I'm still trying to like the one knife I have with FRCP, but I will probably put different scales on it down the road.
Re: What Type of Scales Do You Prefer Poll
I prefer G10 and Carbon fiber peel n ply or Full carbon Fiber Slabs, so far the only Micarta I have is the Manix2 XL and it is not as comfortable as my Manix2 XL in G10 S30V.
The corners of the slabs are sharp and the liners protrude more, probably great with gloves.

Yeah this
Re: What Type of Scales Do You Prefer Poll
Titanium is my favorite, but I think textured FRN is the best for the purpose. Grippy, light, stiff enough even without liners, impervious to pretty much everything, comes in colors. So I voted for those two.
I couldn't vote for micarta since it was combined with G-10, which is a broad category even by itself. I like micarta for sure, both polished and cloth-y, and appreciate the many colors available. G-10 is okay, but it's hard to think of a more generic handle material, and after 40 years, I'm tired of it, especially black. That said, like FRN, it makes a good utilitarian handle.
I voted other because it allowed me to group several materials into a loose category of naturals and exotics: mammoth and mastodon ivory and tooth, horn, bone, polished CF, ultem, nishijin, zytel, etc. I still have quite a few of these from my office EDC days.
Finally, a shout out to the overmolded rubbery material Cold Steel uses on their fixed-blade knives. Not scales, per se, but dang it's grippy. I can't think of a better handle material for hunting, fishing, camping, gardening...

Re: What Type of Scales Do You Prefer Poll
That my friend is the best answer given. What do they say Sal? Happy wife, happy knife, happy life. I will personally take FRN any day as I prefer the grip, I truly feel that it is equal to G10.

Re: What Type of Scales Do You Prefer Poll
All this love for FRN is going to make purchase a knife with it so I can see for myself...lol. Please, tell me it is nothing like the FRCP on my Manix 2 LW.
Re: What Type of Scales Do You Prefer Poll
I personally feel that in order to break FRN, one would have to try hard, really hard to make it happen. I don’t feel it lacking in any way. The bi- directional grip is a very confident feeling.silver & black wrote: ↑Tue Feb 10, 2026 5:35 amAll this love for FRN is going to make purchase a knife with it so I can see for myself...lol.
