New PM2 FRN

I just received this knife from National. It is flawless. It is:
Perfectly centered.
Even bevels and zips through phone book paper.
Perfect grind with a stone wash.
That wonderful wire clip with generous landing pad.
All screws are tight.
The action drops shut.
The detent bearing is ceramic.
Wonderful craftsmanship Spyderco! :bug-red-white :usflag :bug-red-white

Stonewash or tumble ? I am waiting for a satin one in SPY27 anyway. I dislike the tumble finish

I don't mind the tumble finish. The FRN, on the other hand...............................

I really like the frn. It fits my meaty Irish hillbilly hands quite well. Comfy comes to mind. :fist-bump

Nice to hear. I read a comment on YouTube that it was stuff action and the compression lock prevented it from closing or something weird. Can’t always trust the trolls in the comments.

What I noticed about the PM2 LW that was specifically different than the regular G10 PM2s is that when depressing the lockbar, it barely (if even) moved the detent ball off the blade. There is just not the same clearance as there is with the G10/steel liner versions. So if you really muscle pinch the compression lock open, you might be able to get that ball off the blade, but because of that, the ball drags on the blade throughout the closing, so it doesn't (at least at first) have the immediate drop shut action that a lot of PM2s have.

I don't consider this a bad thing.

To me, the knife felt very controlled. When I got my first PM2 (Salt G10 bumblebee), I had a hard time 'timing' the lock and close, and would frequently get blade bounceback. Now, I am more used to it and it is not so bad. However, this doesn't seem like it is as prevalent with the PM2 LW. Also, my Para 3 LW feels very similar - it is like the closing action is more controlled. It seemed like it took a long time, but my Para 3 LW now has a smooth action and now has a free moving blade when the lock is totally depressed. I imagine this will be even more the case with the PM2 LW since it has the two washers. On the version I had at the SFO, I played w/ the knife for over 1/2 hour and it was actually smoothing up noticeably when I was done with it.

In short, the knife doesn't feel as 'glidey' or 'drop shut' as a regular PM2, but the action feels more controllable. I like both.

I looked at FRN for a long time, then bought one.

Grippier than most G-10. Oblivious to liquids as far as I can tell. Your grip should not diminish if wet.

I like it!

I must be the only guy that doesn't care for this stuff. I purchased the Manix 2 LW to get the 15V steel. This stuff feels and looks cheap.... on a knife that definitely wasn't cheap to purchase. I will be replacing the scales with AWT scales.

The only knife material that does not look cheap right now is Gold at $5000 an ounce.

FRN works. I guess you could use titanium and cut the bidirectional pattern in for $500 more.

Isn't that FRCP though? I think it is different. And I agree, it feels different. Cheaper. The best FRN is Seki. 2nd is Golden. Last would be FRCP.

Right, the Manix LWs come in FRCP, not FRN (FRCP can - unlike FRN (afaik) - be made translucent, hence we have the cool translucent Manix LWs (in two colors so far..?))

Not "cheap" at all of course imo, but a hightech handlematerial and in my view it is admirable how Spyderco created knives that are both light but also rigid and strong using it (while making a folder strong and rigid with liners and FRN is comparably "easier").

But yes, FRCP to me too feels a bit more "brittle" and "plasticy" than especially Seki FRN... and of course I respect if folks prefer different handle materials and feel in hand
Top three going by pocket-time (update October 25):

Okay...FRCP. I don't have any FRN to compare it to. It may be really great stuff, and it is definitely light, but it still looks and feels cheap to me. Flame me if you must.... I'm a big boy... I can take it. :grin-smiling-eyes

You'll come around to it, just takes some time. I completely agree that Seki frn is the best, followed by Golden and FRCP last.

I agree, wish Golden would drop a FRN version of the Manix2 for strictly scientific purposes. Does make me curious if it was tried and FRN did not feel solid in hand without liners . . :zany Dan

I will not be one of those who flame you... ;) I mean what I said and completely respect if other handle materials and constructions feel and look more like quality to you!
I can even understand myself that for example "heavy" G10 with liners does in a certain way.

/ Anyway: More and more I get the feeling that I will just have to try this LW version of the PM2!
Perhaps not a knife I´d keep forever since there are other platforms I like even more, but still very cool and apparently well thought out and made!

I've had 4 different PM3 LWs over the years. It might be my sample, but out of 40+ Spyderco folders I have, the PM3 LWs had the most issues. Centering being obvious since only one washer, but also rough action, and bad lock stick. Also, every single one had a striped barrel for the clip, which made disassembly impossible. For the love of god, please add a torx head on the show side to prevent rotation! I see other models with this already (Dragonfly). Anyways, I'm tempted by the PM2 15V LW. I'm curious to see how similar the construction is to the PM3 LW.

I’ve been waiting patiently for this!
There is no reason the people won’t like this.

Unless you don’t like nylon/co-poly.
And I’ll just scratch my head on this!

I'm anxious to hear reports from people who already have and use the OG PM2. This model looks like it might solve the only minor gripe I have with the OG: the handle feels a little blocky. In any case, I'll probably wait for sprints, exclusives, different steels, etc.
