Tool Steel Tuesday? Why Not?
Tool Steel Tuesday? Why Not?
Following on my latest EDC practice I carry a Tool Steel blade and a Stainless blade.
Why? Simple I like the raw cutting power, the way the cutting feels and with most of these super edge retention.
Stainless also has a place I am not a great fan of Patina so if I am working with something wet and acidic that is where the Stainless kicks in.
This thread may fizzle and die and that's okay but who knows maybe it will become a thing?
So to kick it off my EDC for today Something Tool Steel new and it's older brother in Stainless.

Carrying a factory second para 3 in maxamet. The knife and steel are amazing. it took an amazing edge, possibly better than my mule in AEB-L. After about 2 weeks of regular use, it's still biting and popping arm hair.
*Note: the edge is not rolled, it just lightly scraped my workbench.

Re: Tool Steel Tuesday? Why Not?
I’m pocketing the Sage 1 today.
I was cutting a lot of fiber reinforced aluminum tape while wearing gloves last night and only had a Case pocket knife. (1095 steel) That wouldn’t have lasted long so I had to resort to using a scissors, with varying degrees of success.
Things are going to be different tonight!

Perennial favorite, M4.

Re: Tool Steel Tuesday? Why Not?
Well, I love tool steels and especially how they show wear, carry, use (said it often already and also recently: To me any Spyderco only gets more beautiful and valuable the more it gets and looks used).
My current favorite is a tool-steel Spydie, I am carrying it today and just posted this pic in the "in my pocket"-thread

My collection is ever-changing, with knives coming and going constantly.
Re: Tool Steel Tuesday? Why Not?
Had one of my Tenacious M4s with me today . I asked a customer what his wedding ring was made of . Was very shiny but like "smoked chrome" . He said that it was solid Tungsten and it does not scratch . Of course I then had to tell him that my favorite knife alloy was Tungsten ; it just seems like the blades I like the feel of the edges on the best have some Tungsten . Often the ones that disappoint me do not .
Patina : I was showing him the patina that the M4 takes from applying Golden Kiwi . It pleases me .
I have a lot of "stainless" but from actualy using all this stuff , for the most part , if a blade alloy doesn't rust or take a patina I'm not very interested in it . Doesn't sharpen the way I like , doesn't hold the sharpness I like , doesn't bite / feel the same in use . Heck I was using a Case CV (basic nonstainless) today and for the previous four days. Has one of my reprofiled and polished edges on there. Even it sharpens the way I like , super easy to get rid of the bur on the stones , has held it's very sharp edge with lots of careful use these last few days and even it gets in there and bites better than the S110V coming up . . .
e.g. : S110V = yawwwn . . . M4 or 3V =
The customer I mentioned owns a business that makes dental implants and I don't know what all else but some times we talk alloys . For instance he told me quite a while ago that Gold dental work has Palladium in it and I showed him the Palladium Spyder on my Centofante that I happened to have with me .
Well anyway ;

Re: Tool Steel Tuesday? Why Not?
Decidedly old image you are probably bored with to say the least but I LOVE THIS KNIFE !
I am talking about the cut away blade Delica
HAP-40 clade blade .
Haha I had to look up HAP-40 AGAIN to be sure it is tool steel .
When I got this and modded it and used it and fell in love with it . . .
I tried to patina the exposed tool steel , I thought it would be cool if it had a blue patina next to the clad other steel.
I never could get it to take even a noticeable darkish gray patina . The guys in the other forum had to keep talking me down . Was this Tool Steel I mean it only has 4 percent chromium ? ! ! !
and 1.3 percent CARBON ! ! !
Where's my patina ! ! ! !
Anyway it is my kind of knife :
has some Tungsten (6 % )
super thin " ?!?! DANGEROUSLY THIN
!?!? " (1.25mm at the spine ; reprofiled the edge)
((but clad . . . so that's OK then))
kind of like a "racing / competition" . . . butterfly .
one false move . . . a bit too much speed in the corner . . . and it's all over !
Love this thing ; had it for going on seven years now .
anyway , it's tools steel . . . or so they tell me .
(hey . . . I know it's not Tuesday ) call it time travel.
PS : I keep hearing talk of the High Performance Delica . Hey ; I got your high performance Delica . Right here buddy !
PPS : I took some more off that wave / hook to shorten it . Way too hooky dangerous . Don't do this unless you put it in a pocket slip / it will ALWAYS flip at least part way open if clipped to pocket even when you don't want it too .

Re: Tool Steel Tuesday? Why Not?
ignore EDIT : to change "privot" to "pivot" some how it caught my eye
First off I am a metal worker so I would rather do this than anything in the world . Second as I said the metal is thin .
Clamp the knife in rubber or aluminum soft jaws according to need.
Have an old sock sitting in a dish of water for cooling the blade BEFORE it gets too warm .
Just draw a line (if I want to get fancy I use machinist's dye , let it dry and scribe a spyder's web strand thin line) .
Set the high speed hand grinder pretty fast and take a light pass using a very thin ( < 1mm thick) abrasive cut off wheel (super inexpensive to buy) to make a bit of a groove to follow .
Keep the blade cooled down with the wet sock .
Cut most of the way through all along the groove in short periods between wrapping with the wet sock (just a few seconds per period) leaving the ends of the groove for last .
Cut all the way through for most of the length of the groove .
Use slower speed and lighter passes to thin the groove at both ends of the groove .
Snap the waste part of the blade off using a Knipex Pliers Wrench .
Switch to about an inch diameter grinding wheel to clean up the rough edges or go to my dedicated bench grinder with cool cutting pink wheel .
Wash all the dust out of the knife in the sink and lube the pivot with a drop of WD-40 .
Heck I do most of these in the garage below the living space after my significant other goes to sleep and she swears It doesn't wake her up .
PS: I use serious lung protection , a full face shield and hearing protection in the form of over ear muffs ( it is loud as h*ll in the shop ).
What TAKES ALL MY DANG TIME IS :
Grinding all these over thick blades from 5mm down to 2.5mm or from 4mm down to ~ 1.8 mm or so .
I could seriously do with out all that .
Belt sander time ala Charlie Mike . RIP
naaahhhh .

K390 Delica SE and a Gen1 before CQI Smock. Probably getting the REX-121 Smock when it drops.

No longer buying new Spyderco knives due to policies described here. Wallets speak louder than keyboards.
