Beautiful Bodacious Bevels (contoured scales mod)

#1

Post by Evil D »

This is about as close to Shaman scales as I feel safe going. You might be able to radius the edges further but eventually you're going to grind through and expose a liner, been there done that and don't want to ruin these scales so I'm calling it close enough. I could bevel the bottom finger area down quite a bit since the scales don't come close to the edges but I wanted the bevel to be as consistent around the edges as I could keep it.

NOW it's a higher performance Shaman. Thinner blade stock, thinner scales but still curvy.

It's crazy what a difference it makes in hand. I'm sitting here going back and forth between handling a stock Bodacious and this one and it feels so much softer, so much more pleasing to the touch.

There's a few spots I'm going to tweak a bit further, I've got the scales almost flush fit to the back spacer and it needs a little more attention. Full knife pics tomorrow when I get some sunlight (if I'm not snowed in by morning).

Oh, and get your peel ply carbon fiber scales wet...it's kinda wild how much more the weave shows through while they're wet.

Very clean work. This is how they should have come. Nicely rounding off edges of the scale and contouring is one area where benchmade has Spyderco beat imo. Yours looks very comfy.

How did yiu make it look so nice? Looks machine done

Just a Dremel and some sandpaper. If I had a hobby CNC I'd be in trouble lol.

I wonder if you could do something similar with a bench mounted router.

I've thought myself into a headache trying to figure out how to make that happen. There is a Dremel router setup and I think there might even be a table mount for it.

A couple hours, I do it pretty slow. You can't add it back if you remove too much ya know. I got some scales (or a scale) for a Southard once and I tried to contour the whole scale and it was going really well until I broke through on one spot and it was a lesson that stuck with me when I'm doing this sort of work. These days it's the the end of the world, at least I could get some aftermarket scales if I ruin these. My problem is I do have a hard time leaving well enough alone so I'll probably mess with it more over this weekend while we're all snowed in.

The CF scales look awesome ED... I do like to work my stuff over as well. I have this habit of sculpting the area of the scales if my thumb can't get to the thumbhole in the blade. Yes, leaving well enough is a lesson I have had my nose rubbed hard in too lol.

Nothing like a couple hundred dollar knife made into a extra parts knife lol. I have a box around here somewhere with my extra parts knives in.

I do this with all of my knives that come with straight scales. I just use 220 grit wet/dry sand paper cut into approx. 2.5" x 2.5" squares and then folded in thirds. I do this free hand until I like the feel. Every Spyderco I own is done like this.

You do realize there are some of us who would pay to have what you did, done right?

Just saying you've got a side hustle there if you want it.

I would definitely need to figure out a router setup for that, otherwise the time it takes would just be too much to charge for or I'd be charging more than it's worth.

Maybe we can just peer pressure Spyderco into adding some bevels :winking-tongue
