Please help with used Pacific Salt

#1

Post by Nuspyder7 »

Hello,
New guy here looking for some help from those more knowledgeable than myself.
I recently purchased this used Pacific Salt.
Before purchasing I asked the seller if it was a genuine Spyderco. At least he was honest in letting me know he could not verify its authenticity because he had acquired it second hand and it did not have the original box.
All the font and symbols looked right to me, so I took a chance. In my research on spydie wiki it appears to have the 07-08 scales, but I could not find if an older model with those scales and the H1 steel ever came with the coated hardware. Most pictures I see doing an image search show these older Pacifics with the bare stainless hardware. I have found a handful of pics with older scales and coated hardware.
I suppose my suspicion is mainly due to that and the fact that the pivot pin hardware appears to have chipped even before I purchased it. I would imagine whether it was coated or painted that the finish would wear and not chip.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated! Is there any other way for me to verify its authenticity besides sending it into Spyderco? I’d hate to waste their time if it were a fake. Please correct me on any of my assumptions as I am very new to this hobby. I have included several pictures, hopefully they show. Thanks again!

I'm not really the person to help you with this, but here's a thought: seems to me that no counterfeit is going to have an H1 blade, so stick the knife blade in a glass of salt water and see what happens

Simple yet effective, I like it!
According to google in order to achieve similar salinity to ocean water you mix 3.5 tablespoons of salt with 1 liter of water.
So here we go…
Image
I normally don’t do these types of torture tests but this is in the name of science lol! Poor knife…
Image
I’ve had it in since about 5 pm.
Image
I’ll leave it for 24 hours then see how it looks, pull it out and leave it without rinsing another 24 hours.
Hopefully I’ll just find out that I have an actual Pacific Salt!
I was hoping to return it and receive my money back if it is a fraud but I suppose this would be more fun.
I probably should have posted this in the official “counterfeit and fakes” thread so my apologies to the moderators. If this thread needs to be moved or I need to re-post in that thread please let me know.
Thanks again for the idea and input dsvirsky!

For anyone following along it’s been 24 hours and so far so good!
Image
There appears to be little oxidation in the hole of the clip hardware but nothing excessive.
Image
Even the pivot bushing where the black finish had chipped off doesn’t have any discernible oxidation on it which tells me it’s actual stainless so that’s nice.
Image
I’ve left it out and will let it sit another 24 hours without rinsing and I’ll see how it looks tomorrow.
I might actually have a legitimate Spyderco Pacific Salt!

Thanks rycen!
I believe it to be as well after my little test, so I’m pretty stoked about it and have new found confidence in carrying it!
I hope everyone had a good weekend, we had our hands full chasing after the little ones but I did let it sit out another 24 hours without rinsing and here’s how it looked.

Pretty crusty but not a spec of rust on the blade or the lock! :cheap-sunglasses
There was some oxidation in the lanyard hole/clip hardware. I have since rinsed it with warm water and let it sit in a mixture of dawn and water before rinsing it again and then removing the hardware and blowing it dry.

It’s still apart but I’m planning to clean the rust with some fine steel wool and then lube it and put it back together.
I think what I’ve learned from this is that one should be weary of buying used unless absolutely sure. I am new to the hobby so I was skeptical and not 100% sure of what to look for so I had to resort to this to determine its legitimacy. I am glad I got a deal on an actual Spyderco but in the future I’ll purchase from known retailers to avoid this uncertainty and testing procedure, albeit interesting.
I also came across older posts in my search which I think help to confirm that the coating on the hardware was indeed a CQI change.

I’ll post again once it’s back together just to conclude but hopefully some of you found this entertaining and it helps someone looking at second hand Salt series Spydercos.
