Can you swap the blade from the Edgerati to the shaman?
I *think* the Edgerati blade is thinner, so in theory if you have the right washer stack, I think it could work. The opposite, I'm not so sure, although I was talking to one of the SFO guys today I think he was mentioning that someone there took a Shaman blade and put it in the Edgerati handle? Then again, we are talking the factory, so a Shaman blade could have just as easily been ground down to the same thickness and whala.

One of the SFO guys also modded a Shaman to the same blade profile as an Edgerati with the bowie-style clip point, and it looked real good.

The Edgerati and Shaman have the same blade stock thickness. The Edgerati is ground different and is thinner nearer the tip. I'd bet that the blades are swappable.

Went to the SFO and handled the Starmate…

Mine should be here tomorrow, looking forward to it!

It is a full sized knife, so folks with a full hand size should appreciate it.

Here are some details…

Image

Image

Image

The knife has a liner lock, and felt similar to
Military, with maybe the slightest bit less crispness. Overall good. Felt like two slabs of G10 and a nice thick blade. The detent was on the medium-light side, no problem flicking in any shape or format.

This knife reminds me so much of an Emerson, and I believe it’s design ethos is right in line with that - basic, no frills, hard use, etc.

I don’t want to say that it felt rough around the edges, but had sort of an unrefined vibe to it. The main issue that I see is that the knife basically screams to be used and used hard, but who is going to take a $340 knife to beat on it?

One ‘issue’ I noticed was that the full flat of the blade was making contact with the inside of the scale in a decently noticeable way, both in sound and feel…

Image

To me it is a non-issue, but to someone paying $340 for a knife expecting it to be perfect, this may present a problem. To someone who never uses it and puts it in a collection may not care, nor that rare individual that pays the price of entry and only cares about performance. But I figure it was worth mentioning.

I think most people will not understand this knife. There will probably be reviews highlighting the discrepancy in price and features or materials. I can see where they are coming from.

And for the collector it may be the perfect addition. Take everything with a grain of salt here, because it is an example of one. I did quickly put this one back down and spent far more time with the Manix 2 Salt which I consider one of the absolute best releases of 2025.

EDIT: Seems like a lot of the guys at the SFO picked up an Edgerati. One even picked up 2 lol. I will agree that it presents better in person than it does in description or pictures. IF they make it in titanium and some sort of cool steel I will pick one up. For a ‘fancy’ knife it would beat the socks off a CRK for me, and I have my Cold Steels for hard use folders.
Was that blade rubbing on the scales due to a centering issue, or did it appear to be a design/tolerance flaw?
If I had to guess, I would say tolerance more than anything. The space between the G10 was basically just big enough for thr blade to sit in. The blade on this particular example was fairly centered, its just that the blade sits basically up against the scales while closed.

It’s a cool knife! Hopefully it will find it’s fans and with a run of what, 1200? Very cool of Spyderco to satisfy fans of this design like that.
Mine should be here today, looking forward to it!

Looks like it is sold out at some others as well (Indiana Knives being one), which I am really glad to see. I know it is at an upper tier pricepoint, but I hope it can stay a brisk seller.

The plain edge Temperance LW CruWear fixed blade popped up in the recently restocked list of DLT. I wonder if it's a new shipment or they just found more in their warehouse.

So , is the Police XL for real as an upcoming future knife or just on a wish list ? I don’t recall seeing anything about this knife formally from Spyderco ? MG2

Pretty sure this is a real thing. Sal may have had a
4.5” or a 5” the one day I saw him at the SFO. I know he has samples. He was saying that they were going back and forth on a choil or no-choil, and seeing where it lands. That was a bit ago, so maybe they made the decision? Or maybe a Sprint Run of each and get community feedback?

My Starmate arrived today and I am very pleased with it. I have a few comparison photos with the GB2 for @VandymanG.

The pocket clip sits at about the same height.

Blade is a good bit thicker on the Starmate and the swedge has a hard edge where the GB2 is nicely radiused.

The Starmate is 10x easier to operate. The spydie hole isn't blocked by the scale and the cut-out also allows easy access to the lockbar. It makes a beautiful satisfying sound when it locks up :-) The action on mine is perfect; no blade play but still easy to open. I really like how the kick keeps the edge away from my thumb on closing. The peel ply G10 has just the right amount of texture to offer a secure grip but not chew up my pockets.

Like @Red Leader mentioned, the blade on the Starmate almost touches the scale. The blade is completely centered. There isn't just isn't much clearance. The Starmate is actually a smidge thinner than the GB2.

Hi Red Leader, Manixguy,

It's in queue being tooled. It's an experiment of mine to see your reaction to two solutions to the space between the handle and the kick on mid lock-backs. We're making a Police model with a 5.0" blade. There are two variations. They are exactly the same' Blade shape, grind, material, edge and heat treat. Both will be G-10 scales.

There is a gap between the front end of the handle and the kick. On the Endura family of mid lock-backs, the gap is left as originally made. I have been trying to do determine the best solution to do something with the space or gap.

The difference between them is the way the design handles the gap, while still leaving the kick where it is. One solution is to create a "finger choil", which can be used to choke up to the blade. The other solution is to move the front of the handle forward to the kick. We call that "Handle Forward".

We will make 1200 pieces of each variation. There is not plan to make a second run at this time. It's possible we could do anything. It's one of those; "I don't know. Let's try it and see what happens"?

Hope that helps?

While I am a big fan of a finger choil, like on a Military or Manix XL from what I have read the intended audience for this would probably prefer handle foreward. At 5 inches this will be more of a slicing beast than a precision tip work tool like a Sage.
