Well, maybe no one will be annoyed by me posting whatever applies to my knives that I have or getting in the future, here on this thread only. But I just got into more trouble by posting stuff yet again where it's not allowed.

It's getting to difficult for a normal gearhead like myself to just recognize where I can and can't participate in the thread and what is allowed on it without me getting PM'd and told to please not do that.

I have never intended to interfere on purpose but I guess I just have a special ability to jump in to add my thoughts. Darn, guys I am so sorry...

I didn't get on this forum with my intention to just use up bandwidth that more meaningful contents could use. If it's better for this forum, I can simply delete all this thread and sign out completely. I just need someone to justblet me know. I am not splitting any atoms around here anyway lol.

If I am still a problem just posting here, you guys please let me know and I can address this as well.
Never have I ever intended to be a problem as I obviously have become.
oh wow,they're PMing you too?

That's ridiculous. I got a few PM's too.

You have no obligation to follow their request. No one does. They're regular members getting mad that people aren't following their own personal made up rules.

Here was my reply to their PM:
No.

1. you're not a mod.

2. Sal, the owner of the company, chats in these threads too. Gonna tell him to stop using his own forum how he wants too?

3. Taz, an actual mod here, has spoken about this multiple times - viewtopic.php?p=1857557#p1857557 here's one example.

4. You and everyone else making these requests are being hypocrites by not adhering to the rules you're trying to apply to me. At least I'm discussing spyderco knives - you guys are posting stuff that's completely off topic.
Anyways, debating which one of these to carry tomorrow. Neither has seen any action in a while and I don't like neglecting knives. Thinking the digital camo Military....haven't carried gen 1 since I got my first gen 2.....

My Caribbean which was a yellow and black Bumblebee is now sort of green. Man I am having all sorts of fun here. I will try a green again when I get one in from online.

This is rit dye emerald, which has a lot of blue in it. I wanted red and black and for the life of me could not get the scales red.

This was all we have at multiple stores, it's just a little to blue from the green I was shooting for.

Okay, I searched a little. Am I wrong, or were you being scolded by someone with 21 posts in 12 years? If that's what it was, ignore it.

Thanks fellows, I just stay in my lane down here lol. Hopefully no one cares so much about what I may or may not do here lol.

Heck most of you guys been on here for years I only joined a minute ago, if you will. So I never meant to post somewhere I was not supposed to.

I don't ever have anything meaningful to add to the overall scope of this forum anyway. I mostly try and figure out how to chew a bevel on my knives and might chew something off certain scales when my paws don't fit so well.

Today I got in some more green dye and re-chewed that issue that I have not been so pleased with on my new Bumblebee Caribbean knife.

It still looks a little blue but it's more green than blue and more than likely, I will end up giving the knife to someone after I hone the blade. Really just right this minute, the right person was to show up here, I would make them such a deal on all the Spyderco stuff I have around here, boxes, guts and feathers; they would leave here wondering just what the heck is wrong with all this stuff lol.

I am really just have torqued off about this almost green Bumblebee lol, really felt it was going to look better, but really in the scope of things, who cares. I going to post a pic of the knife first of it now after re dying it again. Then I will tack one up from last week when I tried the first time.

Yes, you can tell the top pic is a little more green but not by much, but you can stick a fork in me with this project lol. I am honing it and moving on...

Jeb,

which colors are you working with?

I've had good results mixing dark green rit with kelly green.

I got some of the synthetic peacock. Thought the synthetic might help to soak in the G10 scales lol.

This is one of those knives like the Police 3 that as soon as I saw it I wanted it in my pocket. I love M4, DLC everything for corrosion resistance, the natural scales could be dyed the exact color I wanted, and the Chief may just be Sal's best folder yet.

THIS is the color combo I've been asking for. A nice dark green set of scales paired with DLC tool steel. I think it looks amazing. Couldn't be happier with this Chief.

Here it is next to a stock a M4 Chief and the Rex on a few different background colors for comparison:

Tried to shoot a video showing the difference between the contouring on the stock scales and modded scales.

It turned out good.

I was shooting for a slightly lighter shade. It took longer for the dye to set vs yellow pacific salts and I got worried. Added some more dark green thinking that'd help when really it just needed more time.

Still very pleased with the shade. Just wanted it to lean towards the sage a hair more.

It's hard to photograph the shade of green accurately, always looks different vs how it does in person. Used different backgrounds and lighting to try to give a good idea of how it looks.

Now mine is unique. Next I need to thin the edge and decide how polished I want to take it, then go build some fires with it.

Post is getting long so I'll just link this last one, stretch XL salt dye job - viewtopic.php?p=1762794#p1762794

I pretty much always use some combination of kelly green and dark green, but lately I've been playing around with sage too. These photos will give you some ideas of the colors you can get out of them.

I have always loved how your Temperance turned out. That thing looks awesome.

Great post V, lots of good stuff. I have bought quite a few Jade colored Spyderco knives, and have figured they would be awesome to dye, but I honestly like them as Jade also...

Messed around with a black widow Bumblebee today.

Image

Also had a tree stump I had dug out but couldn't get the very last of the tap root cut enough, so brought in heavy stuff to help. It was all my 6" strap wanted trying to yank it out with this behemoth of a tractor of my Cousin lol...

Nice 235 ! Son in law works in inventory for CIH only about twenty minutes away where they build their plow assemblies. My uncle was part owner of a CIH dealership in Southern Illinois . We live in deep farm country . Dan

No kidding, I did a lot of work in Racine WI. Many years ago... I was there for a year. I was surprised at the big plants there that build so many of the brands we all know and used lol.

What sorts of sharpening and honing stuff and to what degree of them does everyone use for our knives around here?

Edit: which ones do you like the best?

These are the two I use most:

chefknivestogo 140 grit diamond flattening plate - https://www.chefknivestogo.com/140grdistflp.html

I use that to set my edges. I also have their 80 grit version but I'm still in the process of breaking it in. I have a combo 400/1000 grit stone from them too that's nice.

Spyderco medium ceramic bench stone - https://www.knifecenter.com/item/SP302M ... one-medium

I use that to finish most knives. I also have 3 sets of medium sharpmaker rods. One stock, and two I refinished by rubbing them on a sheet of glass with silicone carbide grit spread out to allow them to leave a more coarse finish on knives.

I also have a 1x30 harbor freight belt sander I often reprofile larger tools with, like machetes, axes, shovels etc. Sometimes I use it on smaller knives to set edges or even change the entire primary grind.

I have a variety of DMT diamond stones I can use for polishing bevels or leaving a variety of edge finishes with. Certain knives as you know I prefer a toothier, coarser finish than the medium ceramics.

I have 5 of these 4 sided harbor freight stones. The 300 grit side is among my favorite finishes for a toothy edge. Plain edged knives given that finish grab materials like a serrated knife and don't slip around at all. https://www.harborfreight.com/4-sided-d ... 92867.html

I have fine and ultrafine sharpmaker rods and a fine ceramic bench stone, but I rarely use those. Most my chef knives and bushcraft knives work great off the mediums, but I do run a few knives at a higher polish.

I have assorted japanese stones I almost never use. Cerax, shapton kuromaku 5,000 grit etc. I rarely go that fine and when I do I find the finish I get off the Spyderco fine / ultrafine ceramics is comparable to what I'm getting off these.

I have a bunch of strops with everything from traditional chromium oxide to diamond pastes from 40 micron to 0.1 that I never use. I consider it a waste of time. With a light stroke and a steady hand I can get shaving sharpness off under 200 grit and hair whittling sharpness off medium ceramics, so the edge I get straight off fine or ultrafine ceramics is typically more refined than I need. I don't even bother with stropping my straight razor, I touch it up on stones.

I often go straight from the 140 grit plate to finishing my apex on whatever grit I choose. I finish my apex at a more obtuse angle than I set my bevels so I can set the apex with a medium stone right off the 140 gritnplate in under 2 minutes. I can do touch ups in about 20 seconds that way too.

I generally only polish bevels on outdoors fixed blades in very corrosion prone steels to mitigate rust issues, like on my SK5 Cold Steel fixed blades.
