John Oates Says Hall & Oates Will Never Perform Together Again

I agree with him 100%, and I would add that he made his point eloquently. There are FAR TOO MANY old rock and popular music stars from the 1960s, '70s, and into the '80s, who keep performing, when it's obvious they are way past their 'use by' date.

Popular music, especially rock music, is made by and for young people. And as we age we still continue to listen to our favorites.

But for the musicians and singers themselves (especially the singers) to try and maintain their personas and auras of 40, 50, or 60 years ago is embarrassing, and it tarnishes their images (IMO).

Of course, if they still want to do it, and suckers are still willing to pay to see them perform, have at it. I couldn't bring myself to do it. It's like seeing the work of any aging athlete, actor, even movie directors. At a certain point, they and their stuff only gets worse.

I recall Grace Slick, when asked if she would ever consider a comeback, answered (and I'm paraphrasing), "No. I'd never perform again. Old people trying to still do rock music just looks embarrassing."

One of the most egregious examples of a singer still performing, who should've stopped DECADES ago, is Frankie Valli. When he's onstage now, he looks like a zombie, and all he can do anymore is barely lip sync the words to old recordings of himself from 50+ years ago. He certainly cannot sing anymore. To a lot of people, he's become a meme, but one that isn't funny, IMHO. At what point is enough enough?

Jim

Jim,

There are more than a few out there that look like they passed 20 years ago.

Just saying.

Jim

I guess 'Zombie Rock' can be a new genre.

10 Old Rock Bands That Really Should Retire

It's really weird seeing old David Lee Roth still traipsing around and trying to act 'sexy' onstage in tight leather pants.

We recently saw Herb Alpert in concert. He had a lot of video as background for his songs, and included the Teaberry Shuffle commercial. Made me feel like a kid again.

Herb Alpert is a legend. Thank you for sharing.

Jim
My pleasure. I had a ticket but wasn't going to go, so I offered the ticket to my Airbnb guest. He said he had flown to Seattle specifically to see Herb Alpert a SECOND time, and that I had to go to the show. So I went. I met him at the Seahawks football game, then we met again at the Herb Alpert concert.

I have to say, this was one of the five or so best concerts I've ever been to, and I've been to many over the last 50 years. But I've never seen a performer connect with the audience like Herb Alpert did. He was quite the story-teller, and even at 90 you felt like he was loving every second of it.

Sounds like you guys had a very memorable time! He must be doing really good at that age!

I still love his music from the '60s, as well as his Rise album from 1979. Herb Alpert's music always brings a ton of memories.

Jim,

It was one of the few shows that didn't have to try too hard to be funny.

Those were always the best ones.

The casting and characterizations were perfect. The only big mistake the show made was adding that kid Seven to the cast. Though luckily, they gave his character "Das Boot" in short order.

Jim,

Very smart choices in the cast, something that really doesn't happen too often these days.

Except for Landman and Justified (The original Show) as examples.

I always found it fascinating that Chuck Norris himself actually sang the intro song.

New York, 1978 - When Teen Stars Blended In

This is obviously 100% AI, but I thought it's kinda cool. I turned 15 in 1978, and I remember hearing this song on the radio back then. I used to think that Valerie Bertinelli was kinda hot back then.

The Partridge Family, Then and Now

Another obvious AI. But pretty neat. I don't know about the rest of the cast, but, the current adult Danny Bonaduce doesn't look anything like this AI version of him at all. The AI version of him looks around 40 - 45, when it's supposed to be him at 66.

Everyone thought all those stars were beautiful. I think Brooke Shields, and Marie Osmond were my favorites 😍

At 15 I moved from the floor my family primarily lived on to the finished basement bedroom. Typical shenanigans ensued.

It was the 70s and things got out of hand and my parents asked me to tone it down a bit.

In the 80s I attended Polo, parties of the rich and famous(and I was neither), drove a 1980 RX-7 and race prepped Kawasaki GPZ. I worked but all of my money went into pinball and the motorcycle.

The Big Gundown (1966)

First part of final showdown(s).

This is one of my top 3 favorite western movies, coming in just after The Good, the Bad, & the Ugly, and The Outlaw Josey Wales. However, The Big Gundown seems to have remained obscure among great westerns.
