Spyderco Delivered and Upcoming *discussion*

#1

Post by Red Leader »

In order to take some clutter away from the Upcoming and Delivered announcement thread (per the intention of the thread) I thought it might be a good idea to have a place for the discussion of all the knives we are getting excited about.

And I do have some fun ones to start the discussion…

Today I stopped by the SFO in hopes of catching my first glimpse of the Edgerati. Right now the power is out due to the ongoing windstorms and fire danger, but the storefront is open.

And fortunately, I was not disappointed…

Here is the blade thickness profile of the Edgerati next to a Shaman - much thinner and should make it a high performance slicer.

Image

…and side profile compared to a Shaman - the spine is different, and the tip may actually be a bit lower, but the length is quite similar.

And then, I got more than I bargained for…

And then there was a Manix 2 Salt. Oh boy.

Both of these knives are PHENOMENAL. The thing that struck me about both were the weight and balance. The Manix 2 felt substantial, but less weight than a standard Manix 2 with the full liners, which was really nice. The texture was great, and it was nice to see the pocket clip land on the scale’s flat pad. What a nice knife.

The Edgerati felt extremely nice and what I may consider to be a fully premium lightweight Shaman. For a full-sized all-metal knife, the weight was surprising, in a good way. The purchase on the grip was good, and the entire knife did not feel flimsy or dainty. It screams to me to have a premium version in S90V or Magnacut and titanium handles. It just seems like such a natural fit to have this knife in a premium option.

To me, the comments about it feeling unbalanced or the handle ‘collecting pocket lint’ feel overblown. If you are someone that was hating on it for any reason, I would encourage you to hold one in your hand before making further judgement - it may just change your mind.

Only negatives (and small at that) was that the Edgerati had a little lock stick, and the blade opening felt a tiny bit gritty in the last 5% after the blade cleared the detent. Both of these issues I foresee smoothing out and disappearing with use. I also found the Edgerati to front flip easier than the Shaman. Perhaps it is related to the inertia of a lighter blade?

These two are big winners, IMO. The Edgerati wins big in the design dept and with the Manix, the pricepoint makes it one of the most recommendable knives in their entire lineup.

That Manix is The Knife. I have a Military with this G10 in Magnacut and it’s really something special

The Manix would be [another] great EDC for sure :cheap-sunglasses

However - A Bodacious with this treatment and steel would be out of this world!!!

Great idea and long needed Thread for upcoming models to discuss after a post from Beau . Both models look fantastic. MG2

I would be significantly more interested in an Edgerati Bodacious. I really like the handle, the bevels around the cutouts are a nice touch.

@vivi was asking about the balance of the Edgerati. Honestly getting it in hand, and knowing that the balance of the knife was something that had been brought up previously, I would say it was less blade-heavy than the G10 Manix w/ full liners feels handle-heavy. I didn’t really notice it at all. That doesn’t necessarily mean it wasn’t there, but it didn’t get in the way for me, and was less of an issue than I think some people were making it. Where I think it works is in the thinness of the blade - they shaved quite a bit of weight off the front of the blade via the taper and that I think significantly brought the balance point back in line.

That being said, a nicer version with a milled titanium handle would be incredible and would for sure quell any concerns about handle balance.

@sal I know it is a little early in the game, but a fully premium Edgerati with titanium handle scales and Magnacut/Magnamax/S90V blade would be an amazing addition to the Golden line and I would get one on principle, as I really believe in American manufacturing and I think the Edgerati would be the right platform for a nice Golden titanium option. I know it would cost more but it would be worth it.

EDIT: Also, would a button-compression lock be possible with the Edgerati and make the button an inverted triangle shape and have it fit within one of the cutouts of the scale…chamfer the edges of the scale around the button so it could be nearly flush with the scale? That would be super cool. Something like this? I just looked at my son’s Sage 6 and the button would be in the almost exact same spot.

Speaking of a premium Edgerati, Spyderco had a peel ply carbon fiber version at BLADE Show. It felt really nice.

Can you swap the blade from the Edgerati to the shaman?

Given the difference in stock thickness, I'd say that's a "no".

I *think* the Edgerati blade is thinner, so in theory if you have the right washer stack, I think it could work. The opposite, I'm not so sure, although I was talking to one of the SFO guys today I think he was mentioning that someone there took a Shaman blade and put it in the Edgerati handle? Then again, we are talking the factory, so a Shaman blade could have just as easily been ground down to the same thickness and whala.

One of the SFO guys also modded a Shaman to the same blade profile as an Edgerati with the bowie-style clip point, and it looked real good.

The Edgerati always looked cool to me. If I got one I'd probably grind it instantly to my liking same as the shaman lol

That’s pretty cool. Love the Bowie. Can’t for the pm2 version.

Love the look of that new Manix salt! I would love to get one but I already have four versions of the Manix so it seems pretty silly to get another one but absolutely awesome looking knife.

I do agree a Bodacious built like the Manix Salt would also be a huge winner, especially with this textured scales.

I’m picking up my blackout Manix 2 Salt on Tuesday. I just have to drive halfway down the east coast first.

Anyone have thoughts or an idea how the Manix Salt dropped in weight ? A standard G10 model weighs in at 4.9 ounces and the Salt version comes in at 4.2 ounces . Thinner scales with the cuts , different liners ? Really a nonissue for me just curious. I will wait until the Bumblebee versions come out since already have the lightweight. MG2

Since the Bodacious and Edgerati are both iterations of the Shaman, would an Edgerati version of the Bodacious actually be another iteration of the Shaman too?
