SE performance is more than simply teeth vs no teeth.
Re: SE performance is more than simply teeth vs no teeth.
Sorry if this has been covered but I have a Hapstone fixed angle sharpener. Can anyone point me in a direction where I can get an abrasive and adapter that will be able to sharpen K390 serrated blades?
Can they be sharpened with equipement like this with clamp and rod?

Re: SE performance is more than simply teeth vs no teeth.
How about this Renegade? I think it had now desired serrations in 90's.

Yep it scream 90's

A match made in heaven.

Very impressed with the lil Chap.
Possibly the sharpest blade I've ever had out of the box. Love how the last bit of the tip is perfectly flat and makes full contact when you lie it on a surface. It's like a micro wharncliffe blade.

I filed down this wave thing that was designed to fit the PM2, now it works perfectly for the P4.
Looks pretty cool as well.

You could say that lol.
Basically it's a Chinese knockoff of the Wise Men Fang.
They only make it for very few models so I had to figure it out myself. 5x5 is another good one but then again, same story. But for a handful of bucks and a little filing I can't complain. Definitely does the job.

Fascinating discussion -- thank you, David and all of you.
I recently got the Salt2 LC200N Wharncliffe SpyderEdge Green FRN with the intention of gifting it to a friend who lives on a small farm in Texas with his wife and dog.
Many years ago, I gave him a yellow H1 Dragonfly PE for when he goes fishing.
So now I'm wondering if I should keep that green SpyderEdge.
Question: How difficult is it to remove tape from serrated blades?

Concerning your question: I actually never really paid attention (and don´t cut a lot of tape anyway) if it is any harder than removing tape from a PE blade, but I´d guess that it IS ("harder") by a little bit...flash900 wrote: ↑Tue Dec 23, 2025 6:57 pmFascinating discussion -- thank you, David and all of you.

I can try these days and let you know... what kind of tape do you have in mind?
I should have "normal" tape and the tougher duct tape at home.
Concerning the LC200N Salt 2 SE: As always: I do like its serration pattern for more aggressive outdoor work, but imo out of the box it is not as good (smooth, non-snagging...) for general EDC as some other SE knives (like Endela SE, Chap SE or Stretch 2 XL SE).
Sure it will get "better" (for how I personally like serrations!) after some sharpening.

Removing tape is easy. Mineral spirits, naphtha, gasoline, WD-40 are some of the common solvents that will release pressure-sensitive adhesives such as found in tape.flash900 wrote: ↑Tue Dec 23, 2025 6:57 pmFascinating discussion -- thank you, David and all of you.

When I’m out and about and need to remove tape residue from my knife blade I’ll use body oil (sebum) from my nose or from behind my ear, and rub from spine to edge with my thumb. It’s slower but effective.
Re: SE performance is more than simply teeth vs no teeth.
But do you still find a difference between PE and SE when it comes to removing tape?Bill1170 wrote: ↑Tue Dec 23, 2025 10:45 pmRemoving tape is easy. Mineral spirits, naphtha, gasoline, WD-40 are some of the common solvents that will release pressure-sensitive adhesives such as found in tape.

Re: SE performance is more than simply teeth vs no teeth.
Not really. My thumb pads conform nicely to either type of edge, and solvents don’t even care what shape the surface is. The key is to wipe from spine to apex rather than from handle to tip.Wartstein wrote: ↑Tue Dec 23, 2025 11:05 pmBut do you still find a difference between PE and SE when it comes to removing tape?Bill1170 wrote: ↑Tue Dec 23, 2025 10:45 pmRemoving tape is easy. Re: SE performance is more than simply teeth vs no teeth.
There is a difference for sure since on a plain edge you can easily spray it with wd40 and take all off in one swoop with a piece of cloth or something. However I think that it's still a good trade off because the is no way I can process boxes more quickly with a plain edge Chaparral vs a serrated one.Wartstein wrote: ↑Tue Dec 23, 2025 11:05 pmBut do you still find a difference between PE and SE when it comes to removing tape?Bill1170 wrote: ↑Tue Dec 23, 2025 10:45 pmRemoving tape is easy. Saves me much more time compared to the additional 5" it takes me to wipe the blade clean.
Re: SE performance is more than simply teeth vs no teeth.
Take a look at a tape dispenser, any kind - scotch tape, packing tape, whatever. Ask yourself why they don't use a plain edge to cut the tape & why you never need to clean tape residue from the cutter?
Re: SE performance is more than simply teeth vs no teeth.
Could also be that this has not much to do with cleaning, but that "SE" just works better and especially longer than PE for cutting tape in a tape dispenser...?
Like in PE gets pretty useless when dull, but not so SE... and the "teeth" of SE will always penetrate the tape and Initiate a decent cut?
Just a guess!

Re: SE performance is more than simply teeth vs no teeth.
I had a whole post typed out. Before hitting "submit," I got curious and grabbed a couple tape dispensers to make some observations. That resulted in having to delete my entire post and start anew.
Cutting tape with the serrations on a tape dispenser is nothing at all like cutting things with a serrated knife. With a tape dispenser, every cut is a push cut. Slicing doesn't work. If you look very closely (see the attached pics), the serrations on the dispenser blade have pointy tips. As a cut is initiated, the user pulls the tape and stretches it over the pointy tips. The tips perforate the tape, creating a "dotted line" of perforations. This weakened dotted line is where tearing starts. As the leading edge of the tape tears, more force is exerted along the line of contact between the edge and the tape, and the perforation/tearing continues.
Re: SE performance is more than simply teeth vs no teeth.
@RustyIron: YES! Exactly. And you can use your SE knife, particularly one with some belly and pointy serrations, to "cut" the tape on your packages the same way. Push the serrations through the tape, creating a "dotted line" and the tape will part without gumming up your edge.

Re: SE performance is more than simply teeth vs no teeth.
Without getting the full Triangle Sharp Maker,, if I get the Spyderco Ceramic Round File, could I use that to keep my serrated Stretch XL Salt and Pacific Salt sharp, by sharpening the scallops and the tip/point?
