Planning to take off work one day, I got in line at like 3am at an estate sale because they had a lathe in the corner of some small picture online, and I thought I was first in line, but then some old guy, who was truly the first in line with his little box, gets out of his car and comes to talk to me and tells me he wants the lathe. Can't beat the retired folks. I just went to work that day lol.

Those wrinkled up old gray-hairs just mess it up for everyone, right?
Did you finally get the lathe you wanted? What are you looking for? Where you at?
Sometimes nice machine tools become available around here.

This is my current baby. The shot was taken almost 16 years ago to the day. Wife and I picked it up in San Diego and dragged it home. The hardest part was rolling it up our inclined driveway and then positioning it in the garage.

Your username checks out. The lathe looks great!

I think the one I saw years ago was a smaller Logan or something, nothing crazy.

I really don't have room at the moment for a big ol' metal lathe in the shop - most of it is filled w/ woodworking tools and some old dirtbikes. Although I do know where an old neglected 14" Monarch resides...but it has been outside for a few years and the condition of the ways is a bit dubious.

My real passion has been vintage woodworking tools - it will stay with me to become a great 'old man' hobby for sure! Another great one (as just about as niche-y as knives) is the collecting and restoration of old American briar tobbaciana.

Hmmm... there's a small Logan near here that I picked up from an estate. It's just sitting in a shed and I don't think it will ever be used. If I recall correctly, the headstock bearings exhibit some play, but otherwise it's not terrible. It wouldn't be worth driving across the country for, but if you know someone who is coming out this way and will have truck space on the way home. It will take a little work to make it into a "good" lathe.

Thank you! Very, very kind of you, I appreciate your generous offer, though will likely not be able to take you up on it.

At some point when I have more shop room, I will be probably looking for one, for the making of some small parts. I greatly admire the skill that good machinists have, and fully believe that the more people in our country know how to do that, the better it will be for everyone. I love working with my hands!

I opened my Mystery Box on Christmas morning with the kids as they opened their Santa gifts. The kiddos were very surprised that Santa knew what I wanted! My box had:

1. Shaman SpyderEdge in Stonewashed S30V and Black G-10 handles (SV $100ish)
2. Military 2 Crucarta (SV $128)
3. Para 3 Maxamet (SV $79)

Honestly Santa knocked it out of the park. The Shaman was exactly what I wanted and has become my favorite knife. Love the little finger choil nub, as I feel like it is a tactile way of knowing when the blade fully is closed. At first, I wasn't sure about the serrations, but I have come to really enjoy them and will be seeking out a few other models in the spyderedge variant going forward.

I know I am very late to this thread but thought some of you might like to know the contents of another Mystery Box haul. Some have voiced their complaints on this topic, but I had a great experience and will be participating in the next event too. It was a really fun surprise to see the Shaman and Military 2 which are two of the knives I really was hoping to find. The way I view it, these are leftovers from the in-person sale, so I'm not taking anything from the guys who show and hand pick their selections. And worst case, if I don't personally like the contents, I end with gifts for others or decent items to trade with. Thanks to the Spyderco team for this fun and unique experience.
