Whatever happened to the Centofante 4?
Whatever happened to the Centofante 4?
Is the Centofante 4 a thing? I saw a picture on line as a wharncliffe the design makes great sense.
Re: Whatever happened to the Centofante 4?
Probably got discontinued due to low sales. Wharncliffes didn't always have the popularity that they have today.

Yes, it's a real thing but it was discontinued in 2009. It's a great looking knife. I wouldn't mind seeing a sprint run in the future.

Re: Whatever happened to the Centofante 4?
Too bad Great design. As an idea add a nice PM2 style Choil and a button actuated compression lock like the Smock and steels like K390, Cruewear and Magnacut both standard blade and Whsrncliffe, I am betting these, would sell very well.
Re: Whatever happened to the Centofante 4?
What you're describing would be an entirely new model.
The Centofante 4 was originally introduced as a compression lock called the "Vesuvius." I don't know if Spyderco would return to the Vesuvius but that could be close to what you're asking for, at least.

People have been asking for a sprint for years... Hopefully the Cruwear CF Centofante3 was an indication that the 4 will happen too!

Re: Whatever happened to the Centofante 4?
I would've been happy with a ZDP-189/carbon fiber sprint like was typical of Seki sprints at one time. Even if they left the handle in FRN maybe do it in British Racing Green like the other ZDP models had.

This was one of the first models that had me wanting more designs without ricassos sticking out of the handle and edges coming all the way to the handle (even though I dislike the sharpening notch).
I would also be super interested in a Centofante 4 version like the last Cruwear Centofante 3 we just got.

A beautiful knife.
I didn’t know about Spyderco until a few years after it was discontinued but would love to try one out.
If Spyderco really wants to boost the sales of a wharncliffe model, debut MagnaMax in one, just be sure to make enough!

Just bring it back but keep the hollow grind.

Re: Whatever happened to the Centofante 4?
What issues plague the Ce tofante 3? Actually considering one. Thanks
Re: Whatever happened to the Centofante 4?
why add a choil? the handle has enough room for a full grip and there's no need to choke up on a knife with the edge right up to the handle.
if anything I'd vote for the opposite, more knives designed like this. The regular grip on handles tends to be more comfortable than the choked up grip, so it makes more sense to simply bring the edge back to the handle in my eyes.
Re: Whatever happened to the Centofante 4?
The choil is something my hand always seeks for ever since my first PM2 it is kind of like a condition at this point

I was referring to the exclusive which had problems with the blade chipping . There is a topic in regards to the problem. Standard models are fine and the 3 has screws instead of pinned construction. MG2

Re: Whatever happened to the Centofante 4?
I looked into some older discussions, the CF Centafonte with Cruewear has my attention and descriptions show it as hollow ground but discussions here say otherwise was there a time when the Cruewear was not hollow ground? Is it hollowground now?

Thank You !
for once I wasn't "that guy" . I'm trying to be less bousterous but I feel strongly about that one.
PS: while I'm at it I'll say , especially for this knife , the hollow ground is over rated as well . I have two of the CENTOFANTE 3s , one I full flat ground and reprofiled a little to my normal ~ 0.010" to 0.012" behind the edge and ALL of the hollow grind disappears at that point .
just saying . . .
If I would change anything at all it would be to add a little texture / jimpping on the spine of the handle and around the sides of the handle at the pivot ; which I did on my modded one .

One "3" I bought new in 2020 and the second one I bought new in 2024 .
BOTH ARE PINNED INCLUDING THE PIVOT .
I'm happy with them . . .

Re: Whatever happened to the Centofante 4?
The screw construction Centy 3 came out after the exclusive release. I have no problem with the pinned Centy 4 construction , easy for to overlook since it feels so nice in hand for me . Re: Whatever happened to the Centofante 4?
This does not need a choil, in fact this is a rare spyderco where the edge goes all the way to the handle. I need to pick up a screw version, miss my old one. They were a steal in 2008 or so when they were under $50
