Two more gems to my collection - Jess Horn and Caly Jr
Two more gems to my collection - Jess Horn and Caly Jr
I added these two mint condition knives to my collection. I am blown away by the Jess Horn (ZDP-189/420J blade). The size is amazing and the knife is somehow very comfortable to hold and use. The Caly Jr is also very interesting, think it will be a good candidate for use for many people even if sold now.
Both blades are sharp and cut like crazy and such a joy to use. I am really enjoying these two older knives and the JH really has the feel of a gentleman's knife.

Excellent!
I really like the Calypso Jr, and the little tiny “Jess Horn” pattern on the other handle is really cool!

It is a nice touch and well done. The only change I would ask for if this is remade .. is to replace it with the deep carry wire clip. I am going to remove the clip and see how I like carrying it that way, think it will work very well.Aladinsane wrote: ↑Tue Nov 04, 2025 10:06 amExcellent!I really like the Calypso Jr, and the little tiny “Jess Horn” pattern on the other handle is really cool!

Hmm… I see your point about the clip. I’m sure it will be great loose in pocket, but yes, a wire clip would be nice.srivats wrote: ↑Tue Nov 04, 2025 10:44 amIt is a nice touch and well done. Very nice!
I have two of the Calypso Jr Super Blue sprint run knives and they rarely see the light of day. I'm going to have to dig one of them out and put it in rotation for a few months
The Baby Horn Sprint is one of my favorite Gents knives

Hi Srivats,
Nice finds, thanx fer sharin'.
The R&D development of both of those models brings back good memories. If you think of a "design" as a "thought", a "Spirit", if you will. Then we transform that "Spirit" into a knife. A physical example of the thought.
The completion of the design is the end of the "design" chapter. Production, improvement, variations are the next chapter. Jess was great to work with. A very high degree of skill, quality and ethics.
The Calypso was he first effective example of the bi-directional texture being developed. Peter had to make a styro-foam model as an example to show the Japanese makers what we were trying to achieve. now Bi-directional texture is common on most of our FRN models and different makers have "their own" pattern.

Sal, beautiful explanation, thank you. Your words remind me of this section in "Zen and Art of Motorcycle Maintenance"sal wrote: ↑Tue Nov 04, 2025 11:23 pmHi Srivats,

“Sometime look at a novice workman or a bad workman and compare his expression with that of a craftsman whose work you know is excellent and you’ll see the difference. The craftsman isn’t ever following a single line of instruction. He’s making decisions as he goes along. For that reason he’ll be absorbed and attentive to what he’s doing even though he doesn’t deliberately contrive this. His motions and the machine are in a kind of harmony. He isn’t following any set of written instructions because the nature of the material at hand determines his thoughts and motions, which simultaneously change the nature of the material at hand. The material and his thoughts are changing together in a progression of changes until his mind is at rest at the same time the material is right.”
I have noticed and often wondered about the FRN patterns in Golden (eg Native 5) vs Seki city (eg Delica) vs Taiwan (eg Chaparral) knives. Now I know the answer for that too. So much thoughtful detail in Spyderco's work and it's beautiful.

I recently bought this C34 Jess Horn II. The handle is smooth, but the knife is still very cool.

The Calypso Jr. is a timeless and awesome design. I now have my own small collection in VG10, ZDP189 and Superblue but I still dream of a cobalt blue one in SPY27.sal wrote: ↑Tue Nov 04, 2025 11:23 pmHi Srivats,
