What could this be?
While checking my progress with a magnifier connected to my phone, I noticed this line from apex to spine. It seems to be only on one side. It’s a very straight line, but hardly visible to the naked eye. Any ideas on what it might be?

Re: What could this be?
Well, it's a counterfeit. So....
I think it's crazy that they'd be so brazen as to counterfeit a MAXAMET model. There's no way they could even come close.
Kinda seems like a troll post?

Kind of looks like a scratch that is starting to show signs of patina, or corrosion. Maybe a deep grind line? It looks very straight and spaced to where it lines up with the other slightly visible grind lines.Ow!Icutmyself! wrote: ↑Fri Oct 24, 2025 3:50 pmWhile checking my progress with a magnifier connected to my phone, I noticed this line from apex to spine. Looks like a Maxamet Native 5 to me.
What makes you say it's counterfeit? Looks authentic to me. It just has custom engraving on the blade that says "...China." I'd be curious to know what the first part of the engraving says.BornIn1500 wrote: ↑Fri Oct 24, 2025 4:50 pmWell, it's a counterfeit. So....

Re: What could this be?
I bought it over the phone from the Spyderco Factory Outlet. Yes, it does say “Not made in china” It is a Native 5.
Perhaps I should change my username to “Not a troll”
In my opinion I think and hope it a grind line scratch.

No need to change your name, I was a bit concerned when I saw the word “China” brazenly emblazoned on the blade!
No criticism of you, just concern that you had a quality knife.
You got me on that one!

Re: What could this be?
Just to be on the safe side, try prying something with it. If it snaps you know it’s legit Maxamet.
(I’m kidding, don’t do that)

Re: What could this be?
But if he tries prying with it, we'll have another data point for the Taichung vs Golden Maxamet thread

Re: What could this be?
Define “prying”. If it does snap after following your instructions, will you pay to replace it?
I don’t pry with knives, neither do I cut things with a screwdriver.

Sorry, Zhyla, I missed the part where you said you were kidding. Is Maxamet really that delicate?

Ahhhhhh.... that makes it clear. The cropping in the original picture didn't do that knife any favors. lol

Re: What could this be?
Yeah, after I looked at it, I figured it might be a bit misleading. Sorry.
The post about it being a possible grind line because it was parallel to the very hard to see grind lines made sense after I looked closely.
Very faint grind lines completely parallel to the scratch I’m looking at.
I think problem solved (or at least explained)
Thanks everyone.

'Not Made in China' haha love it. Did you custom order it and they just did the engraving and then sent it out to you? Now that I think about it, they have a cabinet there that has all sorts of custom laser engravings in there.
Maybe I should swing on by and have them put '#1 Favorite Customer' on my 15V M2 LW

Re: What could this be?
Yes, Red Leader, it was a custom order and engraving. It will be on all my Spyderco knives from now on. You are welcome to use it if you can. I’m eagerly awaiting a Manix 2 XL in Magnacut, and a Dyad mini in SPY 27 which will have the same engraving.

Re: What could this be?
It could be a hairline crack. You could do a dye test to verify...

Re: What could this be?
About 5 years ago I bought an Estwing Rip Claw hammer. It appeared to have a hairline crack in the handle under one of the stickers. The retailer agreed, and gave me a new one. He did not want the cracked one back, so I figured I'd just use it hard and see if it broke...

It turned out to be NOT a crack, because this hammer is still in one piece 5 years later. I assume what had happened was that a thin strand of ink must have landed on the handle during the marking process. I sanded it off with fine sandpaper, and the steel underneath was perfect.
I guess the point is, not all apparent cracks are actual cracks... Test it or stress it, and you'll find out.

Re: What could this be?
