Hey Al - " Mule Team" - Wendy

Post by sal »

Hey Al,

I know we had a discussion on this forum about a 6" blade Mule Team. I'm guessing that one of the "locals" will know the thread? As I remember the thread, we discussed the possibility of a 6" blade Mule team being used in some "ag" function. As I remember, you offered to test it for us and share thoughts and conclusions? My normal response is' "I don't know. Let's try it and see what happens?".

Well, Roque just finished the prototypes and we've got one to send to you. As I remember, you said that you were relocating and we would need to get your new address? So if you will email Wendy (Wborchers@spyderco.com) with your new address, she will get one out to you. The prototype is made from MagnaCut, since that was, I believe, the preference in material selection?

I also have one here with me to test, so we can compare notes. I haven't put it on the goniometer yet, but I'm guessing they about 15-18DPS. I'm going to thin mine down. I'd like to see MagnaCut used harder at 10DPS.

I don't have a problem with the current size, but more edge/blade length is better for steels you want to test slicing on. I'd be interested.

Sal,

I like MagnaCut a lot and that steel at 15 dps here has been really impressive. The larger blade choices are really something that would be awesome.

Now taking one to 10 dps is something all together different from anything I have around here lol. That sounds really prove, to be quite the blade to slice with at 6" and 10 dps.

I know that at 15 dps the MagnaCut really does hone out to a really nice polished razor on the knives I have and that steel really holds the edge very well on a much shorter blade lol.

Looking quite forward to this venture for the longer blades and great steel.

Sal,

I think this is the thread you were talking about:

viewtopic.php?t=94279

A 6” Mule is pretty awesome; I am excited to hear the feedback on the prototype from you and Al. Good luck.

If 6" works... SE 6"... just saying.

I’m excited ! This would be a great using for my purposes doing Yardwork . I like the Mules but a six inch blade would give me some extra length for hard to reach places without a ladder. It would also be nice for my short hikes in heavy wooded areas. Hope there will be positive results. MG2

Well color me intrigued. A Mule stretched out to 6" would be handy.

This is exciting to hear. I have two Mules. MagnaCut and M398. The magnaCut has become my exclusive fishing knife. It's great for cleaning and filleting smaller fish. But it's a bit small for larger fish like salmon. I've thought many times that a longer blade Mule (5"-6") would be perfect.

I really hope this pans out and we get a Mule Team XL .

You’ve caught my interest.

I like the Mules and the Temperance 1 and 2. I like fixed blades a lot when the are around 4 to 6 inches. If this comes to fruition I am likely a buyer.

I'm interested, especially with steels that go to the 'tough' side of the equation.

Much excitement and interest, here. I frequently carry a mule and a 6" Esee in the woods - it would be just great to collapse those into a single utility knife with some genuine steel interest. That would free up the pocket to carry a more complimentary/slicey little blade.

In other words: very excited that this may be a future possibility and I look forward to seeing what happens here.

I wonder if the handle will be any different?

When I compare the Mule against my Temp 2, the distance between my grip and the thumb ramp is a difference I really notice.

I avoid the thumb ramp on Mules but enjoy using it on my temp 2.

regardless I'll be picking up a Mule XL. I prefer fixed blades around 4.5-6.5" myself. Any smaller and a folder or multitool tends to work well enough, any larger and I'd usually rather just carry a machete or something.

i'm in the mountains this week. when it came time to choose a belt knife to bring, i had my magnacut mule in hand, but put it down in favor of my esee jg5. the mules are great edc fixed blades an can hold their own in the wilds, but in bear country i'm always going to choose a bigger knife than the mule, even if i really want to carry the mule. this is why i haven't really used my mule as much as i had hoped i would.

a 6" mule in magnacut with a good leather sheath and micarta scales would win every time. i'm definitely interested.

Well, it doesn't sound like many are interested in a Mule XL at all lol... Now just me thinking out loud on here, but they make the handle area the same and we can use the same G10 scales and hardware would be cool for me and mine here.

This Mule XL and a 16" MagnaCut machete wow, just count me down for at least two of each, I hope. Surely they will let us have two of each of these.

Man I can just barely type here, thinking about these two new bigger blades. I have repeatedly tried to buy a Spyderco Schempp Rock Bowie on ebay, I just love the shape of this knife and one in VG10 would be awesome, I just have not convinced myself that it's worth 450 bucks.

It would be to use and not collect, so that does make an impact on the price hit lol. Those Schempp Rock Bowie's are really nice looking though and are of a longer blade size which I really like...

I'm 10000% in for a 6" mule.

Outdoors, the VG10/Micarta Temperance 2 feels best in both blade size (4.8") and fit/finish, and full tang heft. The SE Cruwear T2 is also pretty great outside. Both are almost a MuleXL in design.

A 6" Magnacut Serrated MuleXXL would be near perfection for an outdoors knife imo. Awesome news.

Man from what I have seen them labeled as, there are two different models the Schempp Rock Bowie, and the Schempp Salt Rock Bowie.

The Salt version comes with orange scales and H1 steel, the other with black scales and VG10 steel. They both have the awesome Sheath.

Now there are other knife models of his and some of them I have seen labeled as a Bowie, so I think the specific model I am seeking and trolling on are the Schempp Rock Bowie. Least that is how I have this in my head, but I could be all wrong lol.

Even though I won't be able to take part in the experiment in any capacity it's still amazing to me that a big, market leading company runs such a unique community driven initiative. One of the reasons why I like Spyderco so much! Can't wait for what comes out of this and of course I'd love to get a 6" Mule if/when it comes to the market

It sounds like the listings you’re browsing are mislabeled.

There is a “Schempp Rock” and a “Schempp Bowie” but there is no “Schempp Rock Bowie”

The Rock being the fixed blade you are currently interested in. The Bowie is a folder with brass bolsters.
