I have pairs of these that are going on ten years old now that have no significant wear from knives. I wear them hiking, camping, working, etc.

Also own 15-20 year old wrangler work shorts that have a knife clipped to them every time they're worn,haven't thrown out a pair yet.

Jeans seem to wear a lot more easily, which is among the many reasons I stopped wearing them.

Unfortunately dress suits are not very durable, 100% wool and thin, not to mention $300-$500+ each suit. Never had the issues with anything else.

Not a huge deal but might try only wearing wire clip knives in a suit to see if it makes a difference.

I looked up tactical dress slacks and that was one of the first results.

another option may be IWB carry.

I used to do that when I wore chef pants, which are very thin like slacks. then I switched to using my old black tru specs for chef pants since they have better pockets and protect me from spilled sauces and oil better. liquids go right through chef pants.

I wore a suit, or slacks and a sport coat, for an entire 40-year career without ever clipping a knife to my pants. To me the damage to pricey clothing just wasn't worth it. I always carried a slick-handled, clipless knife loose in the right front pocket. With jeans or cargoes, if a knife has a clip I always use it, and don't care about harm to the fabric. Mine are as likely to wear through at the bottom, similar to bearfacedkiller's photos.

The issue is G10 or any abrasive ply-peel type material. Most of my favorite Spydies are FRN or smooth and the G10’s see less carry time.

I guess there is a market for a sewn-in pocket mod. Maybe like a 1” section of stitched vinyl?

I mentioned that due to personal experience. Lately, the nail on my right thumb has had a tendency to split down the middle, usually from not paying enough attention when I pry on something with just the side/edge. If it sticks out a bit, it can be sharp at the split. When it's like that, it can snag on some fabrics. I have to file it to the quick to get it to grow out again without the split. Others may just bite their nails instead of clipping or filing them. I have certainly seen and even done that myself long ago. That can leave some ragged edges also. So, it's certainly a possibility even if not a probability.

from the photos, it looks like it's the butt of the knife that's doing most or all of the damage; and not the spot under the clip (for which there are some good suggestions made to address that).

For a fact it'll last through washes/dry-cleaning for a while. When it wears out, just glue a new piece on and keep rockin'.

I use the Gorilla Glue Contact Cement to glue velcro patches onto the backs of my trail running shoes, to attach the DirtyGirl Gaiters I wear on a lot of my runs & hikes. It holds up Very well. Like year plus & hundreds upon hundreds, if not thousands of dirty, wet trail miles.

I've also made no-sew rain/wind mitts using the same GG Contact Cement, and some free Tyvek; and they've been ok so far, but they are only a month-ish old at this point. Easy & quick enough to make a new pair if/when needed.

The trick is to close the knife before putting it back in your pocket

Depends on the knife, my Seki knives usually require a little bit of sanding along the spine of the blade to knock off sharp edges that bite pocket fabric when they are tip up.

I'm blessed (IMO) that I hardly have to wear suits, for work or otherwise.
On the occasions that I need to wear a suit, knife tasks are few and far apart so what I'll usually carry is something diminutive like an alox Bantam, loose in the bottom of the pocket.
If I needed to carry something bigger while wearing a suit I'd probably opt for deep carry IWB.

I haven't still come around to it, but was thinking of throwing a shorter wire clip on my Chaparral so it wouldn't stick out past the bottom of a belt. That would make it a pretty subdued carry (even in a suit, unlike in this picture).

Thanx for bring up the subject. I think it's worth the discussion. I usually bend out the hourglass clips so they just go into and out of the pocket easily. We can't do that with all of the models as many prefer the security of better tension. It's not usually a problem with wire clips.

I'll bring it up with R&D and the design team to see what we can do on our end.

Often, it's the texture that is the culprit. That's why the Shaman has smooth scales. We tried a variety of textures, but the formed scale created single point contact which was rough. A clip pad has always been important.

If you must clip it, carry something with a smooth handle.
Knifecenter did smooth black G-10 Cruwear exclusives in a lot of models. I'm partial to the Native 5 and lil Native. Knifecenter also did a smooth forest green G-10 S90V Native 5 which is pretty great.
The Spyderco Brouwer has a smooth titanium side and would work well for this.
Carrying something unclipped in your pocket is what I choose to do. The UKPK lightweight is particularly good for this as it's thin and light. Smooth handled Chaparrals would be great for either clipped or unclipped. I frequently carry my pocketknife in the pocket in a leather slip.

On lil Natives, I like to replace the short wire clip with the longer one off of a Sage/Para 3 lw/UKPK. There's more flex and less tension. It goes in and out of the pocket more easily. It's also a very slight ergonomic upgrade for me as the longer clip pokes into my hand less since it's spread over a longer area. The longer clip is less noticeable in use, not more, at least for me.
On Native 5s, I like the MXG Gear clip Item# 102021. It's long and narrow and has a "just right" amount of tension. That on top of smooth scales is really nice in and out of the pocket.
There are also smooth aftermarket scales for both lil Natives and Native 5s. I like Ripps Garage Tech for these.

Maybe a suit friendly design? Thin, light, smooth, 3"ish blade, subtle dark color and a clip that favors the toward the back of the knife when carried tip up? Maybe there is already one made. There are a lot of LEOs that dress in plain clothes/suit daily that still carry a knife. FLEOs that can't use stainless handle when flying commercially as the bright metal stands out on a dark suit.

Has a matte, non-textured/smooth FRN handle ever been tried?

I have been looking at that one for a few years, but I will probably have to pick it up now, might be perfect.

I have also thought about the Kapara, it also seems to be smooth and thin.
