I currently carry both Compression Locks and back locks. I also train regularly in high-speed folder deployment. Back when Delica and Endura trainers were the only folding trainers available, I carried matching live blades of those models and encouraged my students to do the same. For our purposes, back locks wear out and must be replaced.
Conversely, since the Yojimbo 2 was released about 14 years ago, I have only carried two of those as my primary knife. I retired the first one because the peel-ply-texture on the G-10 had gotten so smooth it no longer offered a non-slip grip. I replaced it with one that had denim-blue Cerakoted scales done by my friend Mark Olson of 5x5 Combat Solutions. Sadly, its handle scales are now worn smooth as well. Very importantly, however, both those knives have experienced tens of thousands of high-speed openings and still lock up solid.
It's also important to remember that, from a design standpoint, the back lock is more limited. The lock mechanism requires considerable real estate in the spine of the handle, while the open-backed construction of LinerLocks and Compression Locks offers greater design latitude. Back locks are also heavier, more difficult to clean, and their internal surfaces retain moisture.
Stay safe,
Mike

Re: Compression Lock Models with Back Lock
I don't want to extrapolate too much with this anecdote, but my only experience with a Seki comp lock is very different than a Golden comp lock. In particular, I am talking about the Lil' Temp 3 LW. I really like the knife, but the comp lock is in no way similar to a Golden equivalent when it comes to action. The knife still opens and closes just fine. I can still cut things. As far as a knife goes, there is nothing lacking. If you are a fan of comp locks and their action, the Lil Temp 3 LW isn't as fun. Again, maybe there are other Seki versions that are quite different.
Re: Compression Lock Models with Back Lock
Comp locks are just more comfortable and easier to open and close for me. The action is a sweet bonus and not necessary, but nevertheless I'm pretty sure I'd be able to make a Seki Comp Lock action fun as well, it might just take some work fine tuningp_atrick wrote: ↑Tue Oct 07, 2025 8:04 amI don't want to extrapolate too much with this anecdote, but my only experience with a Seki comp lock is very different than a Golden comp lock.
