Spyderco kitchen knife block

#1

Post by Marco72 »

Hello everyone!
My question/curiosity is very simple: does a Spyderco kitchen knife block exist, has it existed, or will it ever exist?
It would be fantastic to have one. In Europe, many companies circumvent EU regulations by having the knives produced in China and then refinishing the steel in the country of sale, thus avoiding the "made in" label.

this is what I would like to see in a knife block :

COUNTER CRITTER
UTILITY KNIFE 6.5
SMALL UTILITY KNIFE
COUNTER PUPPY
Z-CUT POINTED TIP
SANTOKU

After 40 years of knives designed for the outdoors and outdoor life, always sharp and reliable, why not have a version for the home kitchen and all available together with a nice wooden block?
I think your wives will thank you :smiling-hearts

I don't believe Spyderco made and/or marketed a knife block, especially for the models you mentioned. Victorinox does offer knife blocks with 'bristles' inside that fit all knives (up to a certain length). I used those for a while, before I got a new kitchen and I got to custom design the drawers and what knives they should hold ;-).

My kitchen knives are all in a drawer unit. You can never have enough counter space, I prefer not to wast it on a knife block.

Crowded kitchen, but there's always space on the side of the fridge.

You are brave to want to have sharp, good knives where any non samurai trained person could have access to them. Maybe hide a magnet bar to one of the cabinet doors on the inside so they stay hidden but accessible.

It's easy to get an empty knife block. Just fill the slots with your list and go to town.

My main couple of kitchen knives along with several edcs are on a mag strip above the sink. Very convenient and woks well for final dry after hand washing and towel drying.

I don't want a simple knife block, I would like it made by Spyderco, otherwise I can settle for Chef Tony and his miracle blades! (old memories) :winking-tongue :smiling-heart-eyes

Great news! I wasn't familiar with the Victorinox knife block, but I'm not entirely convinced by storing knives in a drawer that's subject to knocks, where the blades are likely to have some play when touching the edges of the drawer itself. Unless you've done a great job of containment.

Honestly, a knife block is something that objectively takes up a ridiculous amount of space and protects the knife itself. It's not a stylistic quirk, but in my opinion, pure practicality. (Even if you have a tiny and always messy kitchen.)

Sal designed a knife block for the Murray Carter series that held the knives horizontally to avoid dulling as they were inserted/withdrawn. Very few were made and I believe they were only ever shown in SFO. They were beautiful, but very expensive, so I'm not sure if they'll ever see full-scale production.

Stay safe,

Mike

Nothing I like better than seeing my best knife out on the counter in the block so someone can grab it at random to open a package or worse.

I hope I never have someone in my house who misuses a kitchen knife block.
Otherwise, what kind of kitchen knife block would it be? :thinking

If you lift up the whole knife block it can be used to crack walnuts or crab and lobster.
