Question: Para 3 Salt & PM2 Salt scales

#1

Post by KarateJack »

Hi all

I'm considering getting a Para 3 or PM2 salt in the all black variant. I see the scale texturing looks pretty aggressive. Anyone had experience with them going in and out of jeans pockets? Do they shred the pockets or are they not an issue?

Thanks again!

It’s been a hot minute since I have seen or held the all-black Salt PM2, but I will say this: be prepared for shredded pockets anyway because the standard Spyderco clip used on this knife is a 1/4” off of the flat landing pad in the center of the scale, so no matter what, every time you pull it out or put it back, the little cutouts/ridges are doing a number on your pants.

I have been in talks with LNW about their long clips being long enough to hit that spot.

Don't let that stop you if you intend to keep the knife and use it. The grip is great, and you can minimize the wear and tear on your pocket by pushing "in" while pocketing and removing the knife, ie springing the clip a little. If that isn't enough you can take a piece of wet/dry sandpaper and soften the ridges around the clip and wear areas. For an even more extreme measure you could fill in the gap/create a clean landing spot for the clip with some JB weld. It isn't the most elegant employment of clip/scale interface, but on the whole the knife is a beast.

I haven't issues with either of my PM2 Salts. The recessed G10 layers are very grippy but the slight chamfer the machined grooves have seems to be sufficient to not destroy pockets. At least that's been my experience! YMMV

Pretty sure that by design the centre rib is intended to be the ‘landing pad’ rather than the typical oval section, which is just where the bi-directional grooves happen to change direction. Not saying it works as intended, but seems to be some confusion there. Also the satin models have a smooth finish rather than peel ply so wouldn’t be as aggressive.

You can feel the ribbed part against your pocket when pulling it in and out. I have this knife on me right now. The handles are the smoother, non-textured variant.

In sort of a twist, the ribs could impart more holding power, along with clip strength of course, but it will wear the pocket more than the flat part, 100%. I love the knife, it is my EDC, yet that unused flat seems like an opportunity that has been left on the table.

The black and yellow scales are smooth however the ribbed cut outs are deep enough to feel as secure in hand as FRN. The scales are grippier than the Caribbean despite sharing colors and style. You can tell that Spyderco put a lot of work, thought and effort into them.

It is my understanding that the blacked out model use the peel ply texture found on the non salt, non micarta models.

Regarding pockets- they might wear down some material after repeated friction but the friction is kind of the point
Just one more knife...
