What about an ultrasonic High Impact ceramic fixed knife because ceramic is lighter and would last longer.

What a great idea, in principle. I'd try one.

It's an interesting idea, especially if it's applied to a nice blade with a sharp edge. It won't make a difference in the typical kitchen knife with the typical dull edge. I don't believe this will make a difference once the edge is dull, so the common user is still going to need to learn how to maintain an edge. But it's a neat idea, I'd try it.

This seems like a fun novelty. I don't think this is really for knife afi's but I would still like to play with it. Looking at the cut force measurement graph the only major difference is on cut initiation following the principle already demonstrated time and again that a slicing motion will initiate a cut much more easily than a vertical pushing motion (https://scienceofsharp.com/2021/04/27/the-slice-cut/). This seems like a button you can turn on to access the slice effect during a push cut. That's pretty neat. It does suggest that you can use a much shorter blade if that is the case since you don't need a long edge to slice with. Can I have an ultrasonic dragonfly? haha just kidding of course

Oh heck guys, while I don't have this one in particular, I do have my Dewalt 20V ultrasonic that I do have a blade attachment for. Works great for some stuff.

Now, I have never even thought about slicing food with it lol. One thing I will say, maintaining the edge on something like this, well it's a breeze.

You simply turn it on and use your hone as you normally would. They sharpen quick and do a great job, least my 20V Dewalt does, but it's so much more than a knife.

I may have to sacrifice my toothbrush and slap a HIC mule on it. This may be a great way to sharpen the knife rather than to cut with it 🤔🧐🤨 perhaps a toothy edge of 200 grit would be best for this concept of a blade that moves that microscopic distance. Like a micro sawzall

Maybe it’s too much of a gimmick, maybe it already exists… I don’t know but either way this post made me think - instead of an ultrasonic knife what if it was an ultrasonic sharpening stone? :thinking :nerd

They used to have a device where you pulled a cord to sharpen razor blades in an oscillating motion. Also there is a barber trick to turn on the clippers while pressed against a stone to sharpen. Maybe I could try attaching my sharpening stones to my hand sander via Velcro. Perhaps using diamond lapping film in the hand sander.

Now while I have a knife attachment for my Dewalt, I don't have a honing attachment, that might just be the best idea yet, Mushroom...

I need something to help me get my HIC Mule re-profile to 15 dps and I lack a lot yet lol... heck I have threatened to take the darn hard devil to my 12" bench grinder that is sure enough a beast.

I haven't as I know the outcome of those two getting together lol. The HIC Mule is just so hard to remove this much at one time by hand. Attaching a diamond hone on my hypersonic Dewalt just might be something I need to build a jig fixture for.

I've seen guys attach regular utility blades to these and it's incredible what they'll cut. There is certainly a science to fast vibrating edges cutting things easier. I don't think the science behind this knife is even questionable since it's literally used in industrial settings, it's more a question of whether it really makes a difference in a kitchen with an otherwise sharp edge. I would guess that if this really makes cutting that much more efficient then it'll find its way into professional kitchens eventually.

Gluing/bolting a HIC mule to an oscillating multi tool blade would be an easy experiment.
