First models with MagnaMax? and other MM questions...

#1

Post by Spyderwebs »

I've been enjoying the Mule thoroughly and it got me wondering, Any hints at which models will get the first rounds of Magmamax?

I assume they're still a ways down the pipeline, given that NSM needs to commission more melts of MM, right?

Any idea when another MM melt will be available to OEMs?

Any hints at which models it might hit first?

Any hints from Larin if it's tempering temperature will be compatible with DLC? (I hope so!)

Serrated PM2 with black linen Micarta (and DLC) gets my vote for a first knife run. Start the MaxCarta line and roll it out to everything!

I’m not picky on the model, I just hope they make a big enough of a batch. A plentiful serrated edge option would be appreciated too.

And please, do not pigeonhole MM as a SALT with a preponderance of yellow or neon lightweight models.

YES!
If it’s corrosion resistant to be classified as a salt, please make available a non coated model without a bright handle.

A Police4 would would be a good platform to compare to K390.

Guessing it will be a Para2 though.

Sign me up, too. Regular peel-ply G10 and a satin or stonewashed blade.

From what I've read it's Erasteel.

Oh guys, I am all for this to be a Police4 - Salt all DLC or better yet the new Police4 XL - Salt all DLC... perfect knife to compare to the Police4's in K390.

That comes in either one of these, I'm buying 6 of them to start with and probably another 6 after I get those all honed and in all my trucks and regular hiding places...

To hone out 6 bigger knives like these in MagnaMax will be an undertaking too, unless you like a 20 dps bevel, that wouldn't be such a task but 15 dps or less, is one heck of a task.

I'd rather believe that the folks in the planning department look far into the future, and the next runs of MagnaMax blades have already been determined. It's strange... I didn't receive a call from Spyderco asking what model I thought should be the first MagnaMax. I must have been a solar flare disrupting the cellular service that day. Had the call gone through, I would have counseled the planners that the BEST use of this rare metallurgical wonder would be in the Stretch 2 XL, with cherry red scales.

Rusty,

Sorry man, it's the new Police5 - Salt. It's liners and blade all DLC'd and the blade is 4.955" long and has the new Bumblebee black scales, and I get the first 12 of these off the shipping dock...

Well, Jeb, in the interest of cooperation and harmony, I'll concede that the new Police with the 4.9995" blade would be a good candidate for MagnaMax. However, the Bumble Bee Theme has never appealed to me; it reminds me of 1970's sketch comedy. Maybe it could be done in collaboration with the John Belushi Foundation for Recovering Samurai.

guys I think ya'll are jumping the gun a bit with this steel. Don't think we'll be seeing it in the salt line-up...

viewtopic.php?p=1849660#p1849660

evil d - I'm with you. Magnacut has plenty of edge retention to me. Being rust proof matters more to me than surpassing s30v levels of edge holding. based on my testing I'd sooner buy a magnacut manix xl than a magnamax one.

that said I am curious to test out the edge retention of this new steel. dlc magnamax should be extremely corrosion resistant, but definitely not rust proof. somewhere around s30v in this respect i'd guess.

FWIW, according to the Erasteel rep I talked to at Bladeshow this past year, their heat size is 22,500 pounds while Crucible's was 6,500 pounds. They make more than 3x in one shot.
