RHK - Ramonade Making folding knives

#1

Post by Ramonade »

Hi guys, I haven't been participating much between work and.... making knives :winking-tongue

I finally started working on my first folder this summer and it is finally done ! Took me 2 weeks on and off, more time spent thinking about how I wanna go about this or that than time spent actually working lol.

I used my homemade belt grinder and my drill press, and a lot of hand work (like getting the backspacer to the right thickness to have perfect parallelism).

It is a titanium linerlock with frontflipper for the opening.
The blade is 83mm and the overall length is 195mm. Handle measures 110mm.
Blade steel is DC53, close to D2 with just a little bit "more"
Pivot and backspacer screws are hidden, you can only see what holds the scales.
It uses bronze beryllium washers, 0.2mm thick on each side.
The scales are made from east european vintage micarta, the two tone is really fun.
I've made it so that the grind line is following the line on the handle.

Don't think there is much more to say except that I'm really proud to finally have started making fodlers, which was my dream !

Thanks guys @Mushroom & @Manixguy@1994 :open-grin .

The next one is started already, it'll be a straight clip point blade with a nice swedge if I can manage do to it as I plan ! And it'll have a carbidized lock face, I could not do it for the first, and plan to improve as much as I can in between each knives :beaming-face

Very nicely done Robin! You should bring it to Amsterdam and show it to Eric. :cheap-sunglasses

Thanks guys !
@Scandi Grind even the video link ? That is weird ! I can try sending you a link to a picture folder if you want.

And @Larry_Mott I will definitely take it with me, with the second and if I have enough time the third one too, on which there'll be a Spydey hole in order to submit the design to Eric 😊

That's a pretty good looking knife. The handle is actually large enough to get a grip on. I love the wood. I'm not familiar with the steel you used in the blade.

Thanks, I actually had pretty tight constraints to make my drawing. Since I have no mill or surface grinder I needed to source grade 5 titanium that was actually flat. It's an issue when you buy a big sheet in France, it is very often warped. So I ended up finding a shop that sold 2 liners, problem was that the spring bar was already cut sadly. And it's 6cm long, 1cm wide. That's not that wide ! It makes it so that I had to draw a LOT and be creative to create anything other than a rectangular folding knife :squinting-tongue

I'm pretty happy of the result, the next one is well on it's way, the mechanics are almost done, the Ti has gone through 4 heat cycles (last one cooled by air) and carbidized, so happy to be able to carbidize :smiling-cheeks

That’s a very nice knife and all the more for the fact that it’s your first folder.

Making dozens and dozens of scales sure made me learn a lot ! And except the rigor you need to create your 3 points of the lock mechanism (Blade tang ramp, lockbar and stop pin), the rest felt pretty easy :open-grin

Oh, and having the backspacer perfectly flat at the right thickness with only a drill press and a backstand means a lot of handsanding and measuring, but that's still doable :)

I'll make sure to bring my creations to Amsterdam to share with attendees

Hi everyone, a sneak peak at the second folder, titanium linerlock too but with several heating cycles on the lockface and carbidizing.
