19C27 Mule

I don't know much about this steel. My notes on it are a jumble, but here's what I've read various places. Correct or add to it if you can:

19C27 is a Sandvik steel, aka AEB-H.
Invented in 1928. Ingot steel.
The precursor to AEB-L and 13C26. Compared to these, less tough, more wear resistant.
Spyderco says a more affordable predecessor to VG-10.
Has larger primary carbides (of which type??) than AEB-L.
Larrin graphic shows it tough at 23 ft lbs @ 59 Rc.
Similar/equivalent to MBS-26.

19C27 Steel Toughness

Some people confuse the hardness and toughness of steel, but these are different traits. The toughness of steel measures its ability to withstand impact after a force or tough application that might cause it to break, chip, or crack, and it is inversely proportional to the hardness.

Therefore, the higher the hardness of steel, the lower its toughness. However, 19C27 stainless steel goes against this rule, and despite its high hardness, it offers decent toughness. It can withstand tough and challenging applications without breaking or chipping.

Sounds like a steel you want on a big fixed blade.

Taken from link I posted above.

It is not that popular in EDCs as there are some other Swedish steels like 14C28N stainless steel that offer much better performance at almost the same price.

As a knifemaker, it is usually marketed as a chef knife steel on most Knifemaker supply websites.

For me the attributes it has will make a wicked Serrated edge knife… :trophy

This is a Mule I'm very excited for. I love 19c27 and surprised we don't see more of it, along with the likes of 12C27 &14c28n (in all types of knives). The Japanese Kitchen knife makers got it many decades ago, and they have been using it since for a very good reason. High hardness and great edge stability, easy to maintain and sharpen. Can't wait to get this and see what Spyderco done with these Mules.

Thanks, Kristi!

Looking forward to the release. I regularly check the forum and I’m somewhat active in the Millie Club Facebook group. I’m sure I’ll see the information when it pops up. I was lucky enough to get the MagnaMax plain and serrated. If I like the serrated mule my plan is to get at least the 19c27 with serrations.

I was originally planning to just get the SE version of 19C27. But after working with my AEB-L (finally!) now I also want a PE 19C27.
Oldest: 1974 Buck 110.
Newest: Li’l Native, CPM 15V, G10, Backlock
SE models: Dragonfly 2 Salt, Lil Native, Chaparral, Salt 2, Byrd Hawkbill 2, LeafJumper K390, Mule MT46S, Temperance CruWear
Knives owned: Too many, yet always finding another.
Added a ceramic mug, "The Edge is a Ghost". Great mug!
