Overall was nice! Action was gritty but no doubt would loosen up and smooth out with use.

The micarta is thick, and this perhaps is the compromise for such a long, linerless knife.

even though the chief has taken a back seat for me lately, I may pick one of these up. big fan of micarta, and having no liners to rust makes me less concerned with the carbon blade vs something like a manix xl.

I am really glad to see this one finally drop. The micarta will patina up nicely and since I am not sure how much actual CPM Cruwear Spyderco has stockpiled I kind of see it as a large sprint run.

I went through a love period with the light 'soft' micrarta but never liked the way it looked once it was used a few times so I new I have several sets just sitting in bags. On the bright side...

I found out today directly from AWT that they are actively working on Chief scales so there's always that route
(I will definitively get a set for the CruCarta chief)

I should have taken a pic showing the thickness, and also comparing it to the regular G10 model.

The scales are thick. But the Native Chief is not a ‘tall’ knife, so the feeling in the hand isn’t overboard.

I gave the scales a squeeze in the middle with the blade out and couldnt really get them to move, so they are pretty stiff. Knife felt solid.

I didn’t have a scale but it felt lighter than the G10. Maybe in between the LW and G10 models?

I looked reeeeal close at the action of this one because it was a little gritty and I was trying to figure out if it was coming from the blade/lock friction or more of the side friction.


I 100% saw a bronze washer in there, but my eyes didn’t make out if there was one on the other side. Very well could have been, and makes a lot of sense that if there is one, there should be two, I just couldn’t tell.


I also heard that the regular Native 5 crucartas may be coming as early as the end of this week, and while it might be a wild rumor…best to keep your eyes open.

Unfortunately, after getting handling time with the Native Chief Lightweight, I find that the Chief format just doesn't suit my hand. This is such a bad@ss knife though; certainly one of my favorite Spyderco models as far as aesthetics are concerned. Reminds me of a Mako Shark

Looks like these are still linerless and use helicoils for the clip screws??

I like the robustness and simplicity of these thick linerless micarta scales... Somehow I assumed we'd get steel liners with thin micarta covers, like with the Military family.

Also, Cruwear inspires confidence to beef up, material wise, a thin blade with a rather delicate tip.

I warmed to this model only recently, after I chamfered the scales on a G10 model, and made peace with the fact that it should mostly be used in a choked-up grip.
