Post by savage170 »

Love the Manix 2 I have 4 of them and 1 Manix 2 XL I love that lock sometimes I need something in the just under 3" blade size right now the sage 6 is filling that role but that ball lock is still my favorite locking mechanism

I’m all for a Manix 3/Micro Manix/Lil’ Manix/Minix, preferably in a variety of blade steels.

All I ask is that the model keeps the Caged Ball Bearing Lock. The Lil’ Native Wharncliffe being Compression lock only is a real bummer for my lefty self. I’m glad the lightweight went back to a backlock.

If I remember right when I have seen this brought up before, the basic problem was that the dimensions needed to provide clearance for the CBBL lock on the blade make it difficult for the knife to be any narrower.

Here is a Manix 2 modified in more ways than one, but I did resize it to fit more of a medium size role. Some find the Manix 2 ‘a little big’ for pocket carry, and while it does nothing to decrease height, it does seem to get sort of shave off that ‘a little big’ feel the Manix had, while keeping the same ergos.

And the ergos are a big deal when it comes to the Manix design, because of how contoured the grip is to the hand. You can’t simply scale that down and have it work the same. So I took off what to me was excessive or unneeded length in the handle and blade, retapped for a pocket clip, and it has become one of my favorites. I think I lost more than 1/2” in total length. The blade ended up around 3.2” I think, and should be taken down just a hair more because it is too close to the end of the knife for most. It bit me twice on closing before muscle memory took care of that problem.

Micro Manix has a nice ring to it. And it goes along with the Yojimbo/Microjimbo theme.

Same here. For all intents and purposes, the Sage is a smaller Manix (except for the CBBL). The disco'd 3" Caly is also a very good 'smaller Manix.'

Didn't the patent for the lock end in 2023? Maybe the market wants more compression style button locks vs ball cage and axis style?

But I would prob buy a 2.8" blade micro manix

I hear quite a few say the Sage is like a mini Manix, I see some similarities, but I don't quite see Manix ergo's. I still believe it's a good knife though, and feel a bad for not having gotten around to it yet. So I've long since concluded I should try one whether it fills the role of a mini Manix or not. The challenge nowadays is deciding which one to get.

I still wouldn't discourage development of a real mini Manix though, but I'd want it to be in the form of a backlock. I know many love the CBBL, but to me it's the least appealing part of the current Manix iteration. I think CBBL would be even less ideal in a smaller frame.

One thing Spyderco does not do is listen to the suggestions of their customers. That being said, you get what you get. There will never be a small manix or a shaman in S45vn or whatever else you can think of.

Hi, 123Johnnyd:
Welcome to our forum. I'd argue that we listen to our customers' suggestions more than most, if not more than anyone else. You're new to our forum, but if you look around, I think you'll find I'm right. I'm sure others will chime in with their thoughts, too.

We hope you enjoy your time with us.

Kristi

They can't implement everyone's suggestions, it's just not possible. They definitely do listen to their customers feedback though.

Sometimes they listen to their customers too much! Seriously - They listen so much that it comes at their own detriment sometimes. (i.e - wharncliffe everything)

Spyderco has a prototype of a "Lil Bodacious" with a stop lock but it also a choil and, in my opinion, it should have been called the "Lil Manix" because it is nothing like a Bodacious.

I'd be surprised if they don't have a "micro manix" in the works. it's a very popular request.

there already is a small manix. the manix xl is based on the original c95. the manix 2 is based on the smaller version.

they definitely listen to customer feedback.

not saying I'm the reason any of these things happened, but I suggested the following:

- Making a Military 2 that implements the changes the Para 1 to Para 2 did (4 way clip, comp lock, deeper choil, etc.)

- Making a swick salt

- rounding the Native handle. I modded a native 1 to have a handle profile more like a native 5. they implemented this after the 3rd gen native.

- Making a full flat ground pacific salt.

- making premium salts, i.e. Military, Police & Manix salts, not just linerless FRN lightweights from japan

I think the only thing I've really harped on about they haven't done (yet!) is a sprint of the original C95 manix. fingers crossed.

their attention to customer feedback is the reason I've stuck around here so long, and purchase more spydercos than any other brand knife.

Yep, you know I've tried to wrap my mind around what all exactly it took to bring that Ayoob back to life, I'm sure it's way more than I can imagine?

Sage 3 scratches that itch for me, but was a limited run and AFAIK never saw daylight in any blade steel aside from S30V.

Despite owning *way* too many knives, the majority Spyderco, I'd buy a lil' Manix in a heartbeat, so long as it wasn't issued in BD1N only.

SPY27, MagnaCut, or M390-ish would be my favorite options, G10 preferred over LW (though a Salt would be cool too).
