Para 3 LW handle va Para 3 G10 handle

#1

Post by Mangoeater2 »

Firstly, let me say that I am new to Spydercos and do not live near a shop that sells them. Hence my questions here rather than just going into a shop to see the answer for myself.

I have just bought a Para 3 LW and find that it fits my needs well. But . . . .

I find that I would like a little more bulk in the hand grips.

This question is for any forum members that own both to answer.

When handling the knives, do the G10 grips fill the hand more than the LW grips?

Also, I know there are other construction differences so "Can you recommend one knife over the other based on construction?"

The only way I can handle the two knives side by side is to buy a Para 3 in G10 and compare them myself.

Thanks to anyone that can reply to this request for help.

The G10 handle is slightly bulkier than the FRN, but not too much. The main difference, other than the weight, is that the G10 is not chamfered on the edges like the FRN.

With that being said, I vastly prefer the G10 over FRN on the Para 3. I like a little more heft and the additional weight is a non-issue in my usage

I don't have the G10 version but I do have a LW and the micarta para 3.

The crucarta para 3 feels very hefty in the hand versus the lightweight.

On those hot summer days, I really appreciate the para 3 lw but you just can't beat the heft of a fully fledged para 3 (G10 or micarta).

i had frn and g10, the g10 fills the hand more due to the lack of chamfers and is more balanced in weight

The G10 feels more rigid than the FRN Para 3. The G10 feels slightly more hand filling.

However, the stock FRN model rides lower in the pocket thanks to the different position of its lanyard hole. The G10 model OTOH can be changed to tip down carry, which the FRN cannot.

I haven't tried the G10 Para 3 Salt, but I imagine that due to its added texture it may provide an even more secure grip than the standard G10 model.

I do have both, I usually prefer the lw because of the chamfered scales. Feels light and useful, a great knife to have with you.

I also have both the Lightweight and g10 versions. I prefer the handle feel and the clip of the lightweight. The g10 version definitely has a better action, but the clip placement leaves a ton of handle exposed. A deep pocket clip helps with this. Both are great knives and get plenty of pocket time.

G-10 = Mustang
Frn = Subaru
Love them both. Try the serrated!

I have both and prefer the G10. I actually took the Magnacut blade from the FRN Salt and put it in G10 to get the Para3 I wanted. After putting the S45N blade in the FRN I started using it for a truck knife and wouldn't you know it, I really like it. Honestly both have strong plusses and you have to judge for yourself. G10 is more hand filling and gives more heft but the FRN is plenty tough and rides like air in your pocket. Can't go wrong with a Para3!

The blade stock is the same.

The washer that was deleted, that thickness from the washer was added to the FRN. Or just left out.
I believe!
So it just a blade swap!

I have a para 3 lw blade hq exclusive with the m4 steel. Want another to use the blade to put in a set of AWT scales (i don't care for the skinny scales they have for the lw version). They have some stock contour scales for the g10 version. Can I do the swap or will I have to buy a hardware set for the g 10 models?

You will need to buy a G10 model for the comp lock side/liner, the lightweight ones are different. Only the blades are swappable between lightweight and G10 models. If you want a set of custom scales, they’ll be specific for either the lightweight or G10 version, not both. Most scale makers point this out when they sell aftermarket P3 scales. Hope that helps, Radioactive

So basically I would have to buy a g10 model say in digi camo and swap blades and use the g10 version blade in the lw knife. I like the black m4 blade but want g10 scales. Then I would have a lw with s45 blade for a beater knife. Thanks

The beauty of Spydercos is Customization.

Flytaniun
AWT (applied weapons technologies)

Both are great starting points

- I run 2 PM3’s - an M4 LW with AWT scales and a 20CV with Terotuf Scales. (Soon to be curbed black burlap micarta)

I was pretty happy with the Factory Setups, but the amount of wow cannot be expressed when you see the AWT scales in person and since they have options to delete a liner, or a LW conversion, you don’t alhave to choose a G-10 or LV variant, except on price point.

Magnacut is a really good starting point, it’s very forgiving as far as steels go, but s30v can be snagged at lower prices if you shop around.

For the Para 3 I’d choose G10, unless you plan to replace the scales anyway with AWT’s.
The LW has unpleasant action for me and it always lines up crooked, due to the missing washer. Also the balance seems a bit too blade heavy.

FRN is very good though, much grippier than G10. I prefer it on the Native 5/Manix 2, it helps the balance for that knife and is more rounded/pleasant in hand.

And, just a thought, have both. A Para 3 FRN with something stainless for in the wet. And a Para 3 G10 with a tool steel for more serious work.
