First experiences with S110V Native 5 G10

Post by yalel »

One month ago I bought my first knife in S110V steel. A Spyderco Native 5 . I want to share some experience from my sharpening, maintenance. The factory edge was sharp but did not hold very long before it got dull from every day cary. Cutting carton, wood, rope , some plastics , food …etc… I was expecting this as most factory edges are not exposing the real “soul” the steel involved. My experience with S110V is that after sharpening (16 dps) on 320 and then 1200 grit diamond stone . And using a leather diamond pasta loaded 6 Micron strop The blade is very sharp…loses that very keen sharpness rather fast but gets back that keen edge after about 5-10 passes on the 6 micron ( rawside) leather strop en this cycle cab be repeated many times and it seems to me that the apex stabilizes from cleaning up the micro fractures and chips on the apex each time gets better and better. So in my opinion you need a top quality diamond pasta rubbed or sprayed leather strop to get super friends with the S110V. As soon as you feel sharpness declining , ON THE STROP! I believe you can postpone the stones for long time that way. ( maybe this is applicable especilly to all high carbide steels…)

Your mileage may vary but I just thought it might be helpfull to share my experience here.
Have a nice day!

Just curious, how quickly does your s110v loose sharpness? Does it stop shaving within a few ten feet of cardboard and will it still cut printer paper by the end of the week?
