Forum problems

Hi folks,

Thanks for the wonderful job you have been doing.

I have had a number of times lately, just yesterday (for me) in fact, where I cannot access the forum and when it becomes available, I am logged out.

Not sure what's up.

Hi, @Doc Dan,
Can you tell me what happens when you can't access the forum? Is there an error, and if so, can you please share what it said? I can't duplicate what you're experiencing, so I need a little more information.

It just gives me a blank screen and never actually connects. On my tab (Mac/Google) the little spinner on the tab keeps going around. All other websites will be working fine. I have to wait a day to get back on, sometimes, and I am always logged out.

Thank you, @Doc Dan. I think it's the issue we're still battling with the bots that are trying to crawl the forum. We've mitigated most of the traffic, but it comes in waves. We're making progress, so it should improve soon. I'm sorry for the inconvenience. Hang in there with us!

As for the logging out, make sure when you log in, to click "Keep Me Logged In" BEFORE you enter your username and password. The forum now goes directly to logging in once that info is entered, and you can't click the button after.

Thank you. I hope you are able to get these bots cleared out. Maybe you need a murderbot that targets bots specifically and kills them off that in that show. :grin-smiling-eyes

I was unable to get on the forum again, last night (my night, your day). Do people really have nothing better to do than spend time trying to jam up a forum?

Unfortunately, no. Yesterday was a little different, an actual DDOS attack. We've mitigated it for now, but we continue to work to improve and prevent. :) Hang in there, Doc!

I took the day off of work after getting a bout of food poisoning from undercooked or recooked seafood. I'm perfectly fine, but just didn't get much sleep last night and did not want to go to work.

The forum has been slow all day on page loads. I wish that I could help but it's above my paygrade.

Yeah I'm back to extremely slow load times whether I'm on 5G or on my (extremely fast) home WiFi.

Yeah, everything's slower than dial-up in a lightning storm.

Yes, also for me, in some cases the loading times are so slow that I have already stopped several times. But what is even more annoying is that I have to log in repeatedly, even though I have not logged out.

It seems to be better when I wake up in the morning, after the business day has already started in Golden. My assumption is that somebody's first task, after unlocking the front door and before pouring a cup of coffee, is to go over and kick the server.

Okay sounds like it's not just me then. The forum basically won't load a lot of the time, and when it does it's like I'm on dialup again.

We're still working on this. Tis a PITA to be sure.

For reference and to understand the magnitude, the forum received over 1.2 million requests in just a 12-hour period.

Hang in there with us!

Here we go again. At 12:45 am ET I tried to get on. No such luck. I was finally able to get on many hours later and had to log back in.

That's only what you could see through the forum software. On our side, 6 registered, 1 hidden, and over 600K others. By the end of the day, that last number is around 1.3M.

I'm guessing that's 1.3M times however many page views per second they're generating? You mentioned previously it's a DDoS rather than bots crawling? That seems like a pretty high amount of traffic for any indexing bots for sure.

I wonder why anyone would want to DDoS Spyderco's forums. Maybe they're testing things out and planning to cause trouble on the release of the MagnaMax Mule.
