Spyderco Sharpener Necklace

#1

Post by Scandi Grind »

I saw this Arkansas sharpening stone necklace and thought it was a pretty neat way to carry an emergency/edc/backup sharpener on your person.

Then I immediately thought, "That would be even cooler if it was a medium grit Spyderco ceramic." :bug-red-white

Anyone else think something like this would be a neat Spyderco product?

I would 100% get this, as long as it was something like 400-600 grit CBN, because usually I'm carrying a Spyderco in a pretty hard steel. If they could do one of the long edges rounded (for the large sections of the serrations and for some recurve action) and the other edge into a triangle (to get the tiny parts of the serrations), that would be absolutely sick.

This is a great idea.

If you can find someone with a 3D printer they could make you a piece that can fit a Sharpmaker rod that has a ring on the other end to tie a cord to for the necklace, and you can shorten the rod to your liking. You also have 3 ceramic grits and diamond/CBN to choose from.

I wonder if it would be possible to make Sal’s Happy Thoughts pendant in the same ceramic as their sharpening stones. :thinking

Could be a fun novelty, at least.

I’m in! I got one of the fire steel and scraper sets and while I like the idea, I don’t ever where it. Instead I made it part of a hat band. A single piece of sharpener material with no piercing corners might see some time around my neck.

Or, just drill a hole through a diamond or CBN rod, run a string, cut to length and done. You could probably get 2-4 per rod depending on length.

You could drill the stones but not sure how that would go.

I have one of those also I sometimes wear. It's a Viking Spark by Wazoo Gear.

I'm not sure about a sharpening rod (CBN or other) on a necklace, though. It's missing the base to keep the angles right. But, I could see replacing the arkansas stone with the CBN from the pocket stone. That would keep the CBN sharpening material without the mental connection to the Sharpmaker base.

Amending my above suggestion...

I only have the sharpmaker and not the pocket stone. So, I'm not sure how thin it is. But, if they could be made thin enough, it may be ideal to have similar combinations that are available in the pocket stones, but sized for the necklace. Maybe both fine/CBN and fine/medium.

Not being a dog or a slave, I don't wear things around my neck, especially that little dinky trinket that would fit better on a teenage girl's charm bracelet (maybe a goth teenage girl). But if I WAS going to wear a sharpener around my neck, this is how I'd rock it.

fold up a sheet of sandpaper and tuck it in your wallet. light, unobtrusive, works with PE and SE.

That kind of talk might get your enabler certificate revoked. It's almost as bad as 'Who needs more than two knives anyway?' :rofl

The necklace variation does have some added value, especially if spending a little time in the wilds. Unlike a pack, which could get lost in a river, a necklace is a bit less likely to disappear on you. And, if you were also in the river when the pack was lost, the attached fire starter may come in handy. Closer to home, I find it a good addition to a 'go' bag even with some content overlap.

I carry 180 and 240 grit silicon carbide paper in my wallet...one by four inches folded.

Deffinitely a good trick, but I think there is something fun about having it in necklace format. How do you use the sandpaper when you sharpen something? Do you put it on something flat and sharpen like a bench stone?

I would maybe try making something like this out of a sharpmaker rod, but there is two things I don't like about that. First, I like to sharpen on the flat of the rods, but when I set it down on a surface, I can only use the corner. Second, I just don't think a sharpmaker rod would have a very pleasant asthetic, which is a little bit of the point I think if you want this as a necklace.

you can lay it on your wallet or a flat surface, wrap it around your finger or a pencil, lay it on your palm, for serrations wrap it around the corner of a desk or the edge of a ruler, etc.

You can use the flats of sharpmaker rods handheld easily. I do it often. pinch both ends of the rod between my thumb and middle finger on my left hand and go to town.
May you find peace in this life and the next.

what happens if you rub 15V with sandpaper? if steel gets removed, then there's your answer ;) I haven't come across any steels that don't get abraded by sandpaper.

I have one but it doesn’t work on the harder tool steels. Quit wearing it for that reason week and the stone I got doesn’t look as nice.

You could clove hitch a double stuff around your neck and walk around like an absolute boss 🤪

In seriousness though, the CBN double stuff is brilliant if anyone here hasn’t tried one. I use it all the time for anything from touch ups at work to full sharpenings on holiday.

Something like this would only ever be an outdoors/camping type use for me, I'd never just wear it daily as jewelry. I tote around a backpack everywhere I go anyway and it's easy enough to drop a Diafold in my bag.

This is derailing the topic a bit but practically speaking I'd be far more interesting in Spyderco making another version of a folding Sharpmaker base that we could buy separate and use our own rods in.

If I remember the story right, this was originally Spyderco's design and they sold it to Lansky? Hopefully Sal can chime in and correct me if I'm wrong. I'd love a version of this can can use/swap out Sharpmaker rods.
