I think I want more serrated options

#1

Post by hobbyist »

Maybe I’m crazy. I know spyderco just discontinued their SE K390. But I love my serrated knives. I primarily have less wear resistant steels in SE: VG-10, BD1N, H1/H2, XHP, and LC200N.

I use the VG-10 manbug leaf for my keychain, the VG-10 stretch 2 XL for a kitchen knife, the BD1N para 3 in the garden (SE is great through stems), and I carry EDC the chaparral. All SE.

The one exception is my cardboard breakdown knife, I have a PE delica in K390. I love the way SE goes through cardboard but I find they all lose their bite by the end of a session or two whereas I only need to sharpen the K390’monthly.

Makes me want more magnacut (or perhaps the upcoming magnamax) in SE. I prefer a delica or para3 over a native for this… just my hand ergonomics.

Yes I know a box cutter is probably a better tool, but I have more fun with spyderco.

So I’m asking for more availability of the magnas in SE. But I suspect with the discontinuation of K390 SE that’s just not in the cards?

My two ideal knives would be a black coated para 3 SE magma max or magnacut with a yellow or green handle. Same for delica/salt style.

You really should try the MagnaCut Chief, it's a beast.

I still have a suspicion that 15V would have been awesome in SE.

As OP listed in this thread, there are a lot of SE options in what I would categorize as “user” knives. Especially if you’re not picky about steel.

What usually gets left out is the fancier models. Gents knives, higher end collaborations, etc. And until fairly recently the budget line had only the Tenacious in SE. To my knowledge there’s never been an SE flipper.

Would be cool to see SE in some of the other shapes. I really like the Astute and am curious if SE would work well there. But honestly Spyderco is the most serration friendly manufacturer on the planet and we should just be thankful 😀

I've been casually picking up older SE Micarta models as I find ones that catch my eye. I love the combination of classy Micarta and polished pins/hardware with serrations. I would love to see more of this sort of thing.

Hi David,

Those are nice pieces. Thanx for the memory jog.

On more of the same, you might see if others agree. A strong but small market may fail simply because the market is too small to support the inventory, We do it for some of the "Save & Serve" models, but that's more of a personal preference.

To be honest, when I began promoting the serrated edge back in the late '70's, I thought everyone would just see what I see, but it didn't turn out to be that simple. I've been pushing teeth for long time and it's still a hard sell.

The care and feeding of a plain edge is different than the care of feeing of teeth. Also the difference in geometry is not what most think.. When it comes to edges, many think of a serrated edge as just another breed of edge. Yes, they're both dogs. But it's like a different animal than just another breed.

I will continue to argue for the advantages of serrated edges as long as I'm alive because I believe it is a knowledge' that more in our world should have. And we will continue to refine them. The "geometry of a serrated edge is more like a 3D version of a plain edge. size and shape of the serrations have not, in my opinion, reached their pinnacle in shape.

Those are pretty nice. I had a Caly Jr like that with the same rodeo logo that I bought used. Sadly I bought based on a very blurry photo and the serrations had been mostly sharpened off. My one bum deal buying used Spydies. The micarta was really nice.

I hear what Sal is saying. Serrations will always be less desirable to enthusiasts because they are inferior in the most common use case of enthusiast knives: safe/Instagram queens. If your main use of a knife is polishing a mirror edge on it and taking a photo, that’s hard to do with SE tbh (the dremel stropping method helps though).

The SE Chaparral redefined the versatility of SE for me. The thin blade stock and more rounded serrations have resulted in slicing feel that rivals a PE (I have the Chaparral LW PE and SE and enjoy comparing them often).

Would love to see similar SE geometry on the Sage 5 in MagnaCut/MagnaMax.

What Spyderco knife would you recommend for someone who has never tried serrations before?

I agree with Sal that the market never embraced serrations. The biggest serration brand was Cutco which developed its own stigma over time. Only a few brands still put out good serrated knives and it's mostly half serrated knives that don't do serrations justice. When Sal said they sit on a shelf the market has spoken.

For me it comes down to sharpening, we need some fine diamond rod options! I really feel limited when sharpening my toothy tools.

I like a lot of teeth in my serrated knives. The Tenacious is a good “pocket chainsaw” introduction if you don’t want to spend a lot. For a knife I actually like to carry though it’s hard to beat my Stretch SE.

Without a moment’s hesitation - the Chaparral LW SE. It is in my humble opinion the finest production pocket knife ever made. If you try one and don’t like it I’ll buy it off you for whatever you paid for it.

I can remember so vividly when I first got aboard the Spyderco train back around 1995 just about every model that was available was also obtainable in full SE. Not so much today unfortunately.

I realize that things have changed to where it might not be practical to do that any longer. But when you have several requests piling up for certain models like the ULIZE, CAPTAIN, SUPERHAWK just to name a few it would be worth considering to make more models available in full SE.

I would also like to see more fixed blades become available in full SE considering the recent success of the TEMPERANCE Sprint run in full SE.

I think if I can get a SE Bodacious Salt in MagnaCut (maybe MagnaMax down the road if that's ever an option) I might be able to make peace with the lack of SE options. A couple good SE Bodacious options along with my Military 2 and Chief and Chaparral, I'll have the bases well covered. Some of the pipe dream models like a SE Ulize seem like they'll never happen.

I have been enjoying the Black Pacific Salt SE which is my latest SE buy . I have been looking for another SE model and the Bodacious in SE would be a nice option. Right now a Wharnie Salt 2 may be a nice fit in right pocket or a Hawkbill model . MG2

Speaking of the merits of SE Cruwear I’m still gutted I missed the SE Ayoob Sprint run. I regularly check eBay for them but the SE model just never seems to turn up 🫠 I guess the fact that nobody seems to want to sell theirs is an indication of how excellent they are to use.
