I'll soon have my hands on a good slab of S90V (Yojumbo). That should reveal itself to be a great choice to test this steel further !

Re: Does anyone use a S90V blade?
The possibility of a re-issuance of the S90V Sprig with a slightly harder heat treat has really garnered my attention. viewtopic.php?f=2&t=92593 Not saying I have a lot of experience with S90V as it is limited to Scott Cook knives, but Phil Wilson always seems to push the envelope when it comes to heat treat. Whether that protocol can be consistently transferred to mass production remains to be seen. If any of Spyderco's plants can do it, Taichung would be my guess. Fingers crossed.
Re: Does anyone use a S90V blade?
Thanks guys. I really appreciate your incites. I learned some neat things here. It surprised me that a guy with little sharpening skill could make a super steel like S90V work so well with just a SharpMaker. Glad I’m not the only one.
Thanks to the men and women in Golden, Colorado who designed, engineered, built, and marketed the Spyderco Native Chief in S90V. The quality of the materials is outstanding. The fit, and finish of the assembly make this knife a work of art. I promise to take good care of it. And use the **** out of it. Thank you.

Re: Does anyone use a S90V blade?
I couldn't have said that any better myself. Because the key to not letting any knife regardless of which blade steel you are working with is to not let it get too awfully dull in the first place. It's not very often in the course of a year that I encounter any sharpening job that causes me to use foul language. Because once I get them sharp I just don't let them get very dull from that point on.Evil D wrote: ↑Wed May 18, 2022 2:42 pmCarried a S90V Yojimbo for a couple years. I think it depends more on your uses. If you're really using a knife hard and you're wearing out the edge, those 50 strokes on the UF rods aren't getting you anywhere. Any time I read that a steel is hard to sharpen I'm immediately suspicious about that person's sharpening ability, tools, leaving burrs, etc. I don't see one steel as being harder to sharpen than the next, one just takes more time or strokes to get there than the next.
Ironically I actually find the old 440V ( S60V) considerably harder and more time consuming to sharpen than S90V. For years I've rated the older 440V one of the most time consuming and demanding blade steels to work with. Just simply do all your reprofiling with a diamond or CBN stone and that will usually save you a lot of time. And you'll use a lot less foul language

Re: Does anyone use a S90V blade?
i am late to the party here, but after getting a Shaman in S90V, i am hopeful there will be another distributor run of S90V, particularly a PM 2 and a Para 3. It's up there with 10V in my halo steel echelon.

You missed the teal pm2 that were on the market forever. Got blown out at like $150
Re: Does anyone use a S90V blade?
I recently got a teal S90V PM2. I also have an S90V Siren, Native 5 LW, and Drunken.
I make sure to touch them up after use so they do not become too dull and harder to sharpen.

I recently got a used teal PM2. I re-profiled the edge to a more acute angle on my $12 Harbor Freight diamond block. I did not find it difficult at all to re-profile. It fact, it was pretty straightforward.

S90V is an altime favorit steel of mine. Stainless, good edge retention, easy to sharpen.

You guys have a super nice collection of S90V knives, simply awesome if you ask me. This steel is very seldom on the market to buy and most often commands a premium price for the obvious reasons.
I have a few Spyderco 's in the S90V that all came to the market as a sprint run... it's a good blade steel imo.

if you were going to pick one s90v model, in production or not, what would it be? would enjoy arguments/cases made about why this or that one
obviously this is asking for subjective answers - i recognize uses and preferences vary. but like I wrote earlier in this thread, I still don't have an s90v knife and really want one. so far, none of the existing models scream at me. i like the n5 with forest green scales that came out like 7 years ago now, but those are long gone. i've tried to survey everything spyderco's put out in s90v, and this thread's been helpful to that end, but am sure i've missed a few.
not crazy about carbon fiber, but the fluted cf on the n5 is really cool and probably the strongest contender currently. already have the m4 n5 though, don't really want more than one knife per kind, so that's a tick against it. what would you argue for?

My choice would be the CF Military 2 sprint or the CF Manix 2 XL exclusive

Re: Does anyone use a S90V blade?
If you like forest green, and are into fixed blades, you could try to track down a Southfork... It was a Phil Wilson collab about 10 years ago. I should have also bought the smaller bird-and-trout sibling in the same materials, the Sprig.bleasure wrote: ↑Sat Jun 28, 2025 4:50 pmif you were going to pick one s90v model, in production or not, what would it be? would enjoy arguments/cases made about why this or that one

Here with a Military CF / Ti sprint.

This is my pick for the ultimate S90V folder. The titanium clip-side scale causes it to slide smoothly in and out of a pocket, unlike semi abrasive peel-ply. The titanium scale adds just enough weight to give it a bit of heft and presence, which I like.

Re: Does anyone use a S90V blade?
The Nirvana is definitely the best S90V knife Spyderco ever made, but difficult to get in good condition. Another really interesting S90V knife is the Manix 2 in S90V and CPM-154 san mai. But that's even rarer than the Nirvana. The fluted CF Native is a good consolation prize though.bleasure wrote: ↑Sat Jun 28, 2025 4:50 pmif you were going to pick one s90v model, in production or not, what would it be? would enjoy arguments/cases made about why this or that one

Re: Does anyone use a S90V blade?
Man, I'm late to this thread, but I do love me some s90v. My experience is it's actually quite nice to sharpen, tough enough for a pocket knife, and against abrasive material will hold an edge LONGER than 10v. Compared to 10v and k390 it doesn't have the edge strength of it's non stainless cousins, likely due to lower hardness (58-60 vs 63-65hrc).
