Agree, I can definitely tell some differences S30V vs Cruwear, etc. if I am looking for it. But when I got my first Maxamet was the first time it was obvious, slap you upside the head, there was a major difference in steel. I still have not needed to sharpen it beyond a strop.Mat_ski wrote: ↑Thu May 29, 2025 6:07 amI don’t have have Spyderco’s s35v for comparison.Wartstein wrote: ↑Wed May 28, 2025 11:38 pmNo steel expert by any means and also never tried Spy27 yet, so I am just parroting what I get from others who know what they are talking about.Mat_ski wrote: ↑Wed May 28, 2025 9:32 pmSpyderco s30v is pretty excellent in terms of overall performance. Spy27 is more along the lines of vg10, but also excellent. I believe it boils down to edge retention vs toughness.
On a more pragmatic note, what else would you do with stockpile of steel if you are a knife manufacturer?
That said: Seems like Spy27 is very close to S35VN.
To quote Dr. Larrin Thomas: "SPY27 behaves surprisingly similarly to S35VN despite the somewhat different composition." (https://knifesteelnerds.com/2021/05/10/ ... 15-rex-76/).
I have spydercos vg10, spy27 and s30v. Spy27 sharpens similar to vg10. S30v sharpens significantly different (slower?). Regarding edge retention and toughness I have hard time distinguishing between the three in real life, but based on sharpening maybe s30v holds the edge better. All three are excellent.
The only steels I can differentiate between in use are on the extreme ends of the toughness vs edge retention debate.

^ You're welcome.
I might get one next month as I already blew my knife budget for May. So many good Spy27 options coming down the pipeline.

Re: Bodacious Discussion
Well mine was due to arrive tomorrow but as has become all too predictable the delivery is delayed so probably won't be here until Monday or Tuesday. I swear it's getting worse and worse.

EvilD,
I know that sort of delivery. I had a 1000 dollar fuel pump dropped at somebody else's house last month and needed that injection pump bad. I felt really fortunate to have even gotten it 3 days later...
I was torqued up over that since I paid 67 bucks for expedited shipping. I did get the shipping cost back, but my truck was down for longer than I cared for. I have another truck, but this was my big diesel dually.
It seems like all the shipping around here is not nearly what it use to be. The worst of them for me is the USPS, that service around here could be shutdown completely and I would be OK with that. I flat don't use them for anything, when I go to town to send stuff...

Re: Bodacious Discussion
It boggles the mind that the Shaman is still being made at this point, let alone getting most of the sprints. It's really an inferior design compared to the Bodacious.

What's wild to me is how much I do actually like the Shaman, but I like the Bodacious several magnitude more. At this point I'm really only buying other models because there aren't as many Bodacious options and I like playing with new knives. With a few particular steel options I'll be done buying user knives.

@Evil D Got mine, awesome knife. Still think I would rather textured G10 but otherwise love it so far.Evil D wrote: ↑Sat May 31, 2025 8:44 amWhat's wild to me is how much I do actually like the Shaman, but I like the Bodacious several magnitude more. Yeah I still don't quite understand the choice for smooth G10. This is a time when I really wish Spyderco would offer their own official scale kits for knives and just make us some peel ply and maybe even the heavy peel ply like the Yojumbo has. I can live with the smooth though, I have smooth titanium scales on mine now.

This genuinely feels every bit as special as any sprint/exclusive that I have.

Re: Bodacious Discussion
This is my first experience with smooth G10 scales. I love the knife and cobalt color, but it seems like they scuff easily. I wish they were textured. Time will tell.

Re: Bodacious Discussion
They definitely do scuff easily, but I kinda like it. It's like a nice worn in pair of boots, just the right kind of patina.

This design has to be one of Spyderco’s best looking.

Re: Bodacious Discussion
Seriously difficult to resist. I was willing to wait for M4, Cruwear, or the like, but will likely pull the trigger on SPY27.

Re: Bodacious Discussion
Day 3 with the Bodacious and I love it. I consider it a big blade knife, while not a Manix XL it has just as much cutting edge. It won’t replace my Para 3 or Manix LW, but if I need a “big” knife it is my go to.
Totally agree with @Evil D this is extremely high quality, as nice as any Sprint/exclusive/etc.
Also I noticed the blade is extremely similar to my mules. I 100% feel like the Bodacious is just a folding Mule.

Re: Bodacious Discussion
Just a heads up for anyone wondering about this blue color, I'm noticing that cameras have a hard time with this color, and the lighting makes a drastic difference in how it looks in pictures. Also whatever other colors are in the pic with it seem to complicate it.
Here against very dark denim and in direct florescent light it almost looks like the old classic Smurf blue. The whole picture is kind of washed out, the jeans are darker in person than this too.

But here in the same room blocking the light a little bit it looks so much darker.

I would say this blue is closer to the old ZDP-189 blue FRN color but that's another color that looks different in every picture you see, ranging from almost teal to lavender colors.

Re: Bodacious Discussion
I discovered the issue with the Manix XL . Lighting plays tricks on the color . This new Bodacious will probably be my next purchase in the future along with some Micarta scales. My SPY27 Bodacious arrived today. What a great design. Mine is without a flaw. Love the smooth G10 and its color.
