Trip to the mothership

#1

Post by Sig Savvy »

Managed to return to the factory store last week. It had been years considering I used to work just a little ways from there and now live in MA (thoughts and prayers appreciated...). Anywho, we spoke with a few different people while browsing around and enjoyed to interaction with everyone. I ended up snagging a Sage Maxamet out of the discount display, a shirt, as many stickers as I wanted and a Spyder hole! Overall, no surprises on what a great visit it was and it never disappoints!

Ok, now I just want to know, what is a spyder hole? My curiosity is going nuts trying to what that is...

Knife steel version of a donut hole.

It's the dot that gets cut out for thumb holes.

It's the small circular piece of metal that gets cut out of the spyderhole during production. They hand them out as novelty souvenirs inside the SFO.

Those are some awesome stickers, I got a few great ones on my last order of the SPY-27 Bodacious, always looking for more though. But now I want a Spydie Hole… haha. Getting out to the SFO is definitely on my bucket list, I am just on the wrong side of the country, hoping for a work trip.

Still wish Spyderco sold a “sticker” pack each year.

Yep, as others have stated, the Spyder hole is the blank that is removed to form the hole in the blade. Technically just scrap material but still cool that you can only get them at the store. I've got family in CO still so I'm there at least a couple of times per year but I never seem to be able to get to the store. This time I made sure to get there.

It's something none of your Spyderco's have. :winking-tongue

Man you got some way cool stickers also. I sort of wondered if it was the punch slug of our thumbhole, then I thought; no it ain't that lol...

We use to use punch slugs in a special tumbler we made to tumble torched small parts in to clean the mill slag off. They did a pretty good job, but not what a good bead blasting does.

Certainly looks like when you get the chance to make the hike to the Mothership, there is all kinds of goodies. One of those places that I would get in trouble buying more stuff than I got truck to haul back home.

Ya, these blanks are cool and they are wire EDM'ed out of the blade which makes a pretty precise cut. You will definitely want to spend a ton there but the pricing is 25% off retail and then they have a discount display with even better deals. I got the Maxamet Sage for $150. Granted, it's an older model but still a good price. They said it's going to be discontinued so they are selling them off.

My problem with going to SFO is I'd always wish to go on a day that just happened to have everyone from the company that I'd want to meet like Sal and Eric and Kristi and Michael Janich but I know they're not all just hanging out there all the time lol. I really need to make it to Blade Show one of these years.

Same, going to the Blade Show would be pretty great. Unfortunately I live 1,700 miles from SFO and 700 miles from Atlanta so neither are a real easy option. Feel like I picked the wrong place to live haha.

Heck williamM, I live in the desert of Texas, it's a long way to anywhere from here, so I get it. May be a good thing, I was very close to the SFO, I would just have to go to work there to just try to supplement my habit that just went on steroids.

Heck I am bad enough now as is. Live close to all that, they would have to hire me or get the law enforcement out after me to chase me off lol...

I actually went in and met Sal's wife one time. She was more than happy to talk to us about knives, sharpening, the business, etc. It was great! I saw Sal walking around another time but didn't get to meet him. Always wanted to meet Kristi too.
