I carried a first article for a while and really liked it. I've always liked the Kapara design and I'm a fan of S90V, and Burlap Micarta, so "What's not to Love"?

I'm also "on Island" for another week, and it handled the high humidity just fine.

A little history; Ali's original design was for a smaller slip-joint. I asked him if he could make larger version with a Compression Lock. We sent him samples on which to base the new design, which he did. All of the preliminary back and forth was time consuming, but he really did a great job and he's a pleasure to work with.

Thanks for the backstory, Sal. This is going to be a special release indeed. Hope you enjoy your time out here and avoid the vog wherever you may be. Kona has been bad lately.

This is among the more exciting exclusive releases for me in some years. The original production Kapara is already a very refined device, and I couldn't be more excited to have an opportunity to get one (or two) in some of my very favorite materials.

Cool to hear a bit more of the back story @sal

This is an excellent exclusive, very exciting!

Sal, the slipjoint version has been teased as a future release in its own right, is that still happening?

Thanks and cheers, Radioactive

Hi freediver,

I'm on Kauai.

Hi RS,

It's still in the plan, but it will have to wait a while until we can catch up some.

Aloha Sal, hope you're enjoying Kauai and the infinite chicken population. Check out the Waimea canyon if you can; Hanalei is another must see on that island.
This Kapara sounds good to me, will consider picking one up when I find out the price.

Wow, this is pretty great and I've wanted one for a while! Looks great. I love S90V. Micarta is great.

But if the regular Kapara retails for $270 I'm afraid to see what premium steel does to its price. So a likely pass? (I mean, 15v M2 for $220 is fighting for a spot in my pocket too)

Knives lose appeal very, very quickly over $200, which is why I don't already own a Kapara.

I've picked up 2 NIB grails on ebay for <$220 like a Micarta Temperance and a M4/DLC/Jade Native Chief in the last year, and am finding many attractive discontinued models for same or less than current retail on new stuff.

Very interesting.

I thought I could recall something like that one reason why Alistair choose a comp lock over a linerlock was that a comp.lock is on top of the handle and so less likely to get "gunked up" by food that gets cut... and from what he said he did design the Kapara (also) as a "food prep folder for the office".

Anyway, I had one pretty soon after the "base" model came out...great design, and Micarta should make it even nicer!
Top three going by pocket-time (update April 25):

If it's anything like the KC S90V shaman, the price.

Hey Ali,

I carried the first article for a few days. It's really a winner. Ask Alex or Wendy to grab one for you when they get through QC. It's been in-the-works for a while, but it was worth the wait. A classic. I'm guessing Knife-Center will follow up with more variations.

This is definitely a winner of a knife. Been looking at the base version for a bit, the upgraded steel and scales make it that much more tempting.

Awesome knife, but absolutely a no go to import.
Still waiting on the standard production slipjoint.... Might be easier to buy an original custom though... Anybody know if Alistair still makes those?
