Many candidates come to mind when thinking about this steel, after reading through the responses thus far, foliage or navy G-10 in the usual suspects and perhaps some unlikely ones as well.

Military2
Manix2
Bodacious I would buy in this configuration
maybe a Chap XL could be in the future.

The no rules wishlist would have to include a Caly, but that is very unlikely to happen.

I'd love to see some smaller folders. Ladybug/Manbug, Dragonfly, and Li/Native Lightweight would all be sweet. I've been hoping we would see S110v in one of these at some point (maybe we'll get a sprint of S110v in the Lil Native Lightweight?) but MagnaMax would also be awesome.

I'd also like a PE Atlantic Salt if it reaches Salt levels of stainlessness, but I'm probably dreaming there. :-)

Where does this leave k390? Will it be preferable in any circumstance?

K390 may still have slightly better properties at the same hardness. Larrin's chart shows the toughness/ wear resistance of K390 around 63-64 HRC but we don't know what hardness the MagnaMax sample with the same properties had.

If they find that this steel is "Salt worthy" it's going to be a massive leap in edge retention for the Salt knife line.

So is MagnaMax going to make all the steels that come before it obsolete and undesirable - like Magnacut did?

No.

MagnaMax will offer a different range of properties.

Shawn,
Your elk lazer looks awesome, what's been your experience with the steel vs magnacut and K390 and 15V so far for comparison?

K390 sharpens easily and works with almost all edge grits and works with thin edges. Will MM also?

Also will MM be available in the Endura series?

MC is not as tough or stainless as LC200 with VG 10 class edge holding. What did it make make obsolete?

I'm reading between the lines, and if the sarcasm is real, I got a good laugh and I agree. If not, I still found it funny.

My biggest hope is having MagnaMax help expose high performance steel to the knife masses (and therefore elevate Spyderco in a sort).

That face when you love K390, and the endless comparisons to come between the new super steel and your favorite steel...

I was speaking tongue in cheek - wasn’t being serious. ;)

Before Magnacut was widely available, there were conversations where it was being touted as the be all end all of folding knife steels and it could effectively replace everything that came before it. I won’t be surprised if a similar sentiment ends up being shared about Magnamax in the future.

Correct, definitely said with some sarcasm. :winking-tongue

Don’t get me wrong, I’m looking forward to trying Magnamax too but a lot of the fanfare seems to come from people getting too wrapped up in the latest and greatest, only to set it aside when the next big thing comes along.

That never happened for a number of reasons though.

I'm sure this gets overwhelming for some people but this is literally the reason I own more than a handful of knives. It's a huge reason I even bother with this hobby, otherwise I'd probably just own a couple good knives and be done with it.

It seems like to some people this is the equivalent of throwing out your boot cut jeans because skinny jeans are now in style. I think a lot of people want to feel content, like they have "the best ______ possible" and those are the people who are always the first to get irritated over the "hype" of new steels because now their pride and joy isn't all the rage anymore.

I'm going to start a business leasing knives to people like they lease cars, and you can trade in your old knife for the new model every few years and I'm gonna be so rich 🤣
