Byrd Gooney
Re: Byrd Gooney
Hi Josh,
Welcome to our forum and thanx much for the support.
Thanx also for the comments on your new Gooney. The model is a bit of an experiment for me in a few areas, so I appreciate all of the feedback I can get.
We'll be refining the model as our regular CQI. We've already planned for a steel upgrade and full serrations on the next run. Depending on demand, we'll see where it goes. I'll be watching the model closely.

Glad to hear it looks good out of the gate. I will be interested in a SE model in the next run.

It is good to see the FFG Reverse S come back to the lineup. I look forward to feedback from those already putting it to use.

Re: Byrd Gooney
Update after use in hard work environment. Used for several weeks now in residential and commercial electrical work, and right off the bat love it. Love the g10 handle and thin physique of it. Most g-10 handles feel bulky but this handle feels more of an extension of the hand rather than you are holding a tool. Blade shape is perfect for electrical work. Slitting wire jacket, stripping wire. Cutting all the little boxes, packages ,and even a little drywall scoring. Blade shape is a win for me.The steel. Now for people who use knives daily to open packages cut some food, lighter use it’s a perfectly fine choice. But for in a heavy use environment holds up as expected for that grade of steel. Has small chips some rolls have had to sharpen on triangle sharpener numerous times. But that is to be expected with this grade of steel. I’m partial but I would love to see a more work centered knife come from my favorite brand. And I think this could be it. Yes there are the salts but that’s different work. More of a trade end focused knife. Love it. Will buy the serrated version when it comes out. Also thought for what I do and it would be cool is to have a partially serrated version.

I could also imagine that like it is for me with VG10, 9CR could probably be a decent steel in PE, but a great one for SE....

Re: Byrd Gooney
The Gooney is proving to be a pretty formidable garden - or yard - knife.
Yesterday saw it efficiently cutting back excess ivy growth and light pruning. I also had to cut and trim some 2-3mm hard sheet plastic to some very intricate curved shapes and I really don’t think there could have been a better knife blade shape for that task.
The edge and tip held up well during the hour or so of this task, as well.
Edited to add the suggestion that a 2/3 combination edge might be perfect for this.

Re: Byrd Gooney
I agree Chris , I think the blade shape fully serrated or a partial serrated would make the Gooney really shine using it doing yard work. The combo edge definitely would give you the best of both types especially when a delicate precision cut is needed . Either way Spyderco goes with adding a different blade option it will be at the top of my list . Re: Byrd Gooney
My favorite gardening knife is the Matriarch 2. A fully serrated Gooney might be just as good. I didn't think I'd go for the PE, as appealing as it is, but Josh's review may have just changed my mind!
Re: Byrd Gooney
It did change my mind. Gooney inbound!
Re: Byrd Gooney
Serrated Gooney on order with 9Cr blade.
