It's an older picture, but thought I'd post it anyway. Just under 22". Got my Mule Team next to it for scale.

Well I went fishing again last weekend, and did catch my dinners again - but - took no photos. This morning I went out again, and luck was with me again, and I caught my dinners (tonight and tomorrow night) for the weekend. The angle of the photo may throw off the scale a little - the bigger of the two is ~18" (Rainbow).

still carrying my 15V BBB Mili2.
The photo does a decent job of showing how I've thinned it a bit - or - widened the edge bevel a bit.

Nick,
I hope you get out soon. When I think of this tread, I automatically think of you right there with and/or in it.

Just got the good news that Massachusetts started the spring trout stocking yesterday. I'll be doing some pond hopping tomorrow! 🎣 :cheap-sunglasses

As per usual, nice fish! Thanks for sharing. At first I thought the one with the humpback was a trophy size fish but then I saw the knife under it. :grin-squint Still though, 18" is a good fish in my book! So, nice catch either way! :cheap-sunglasses

Also that edge looks great. Is that the current knife on fish cleaning duty?

Awesome reason to get into it! I've been fishing with my nieces since they were very young and they look forward to it every summer now.

I'm not familiar with Camping world but any of the other stores you listed will have every thing you need. Just a forewarning though, there's a good chance that Cabelas will be the priciest of those options and they might not have some of the budget options that are available at Academy or Walmart.

I like the Mora metaphor. :grin-squint I think the Mora of fishing rods is either Ugly Stik or Zebco. They both have long established reputations and they're known for the value they offer.

I have more experience with Ugly Stik. Specifically the Ugly Stik GX2 spinning combo. Costs around $50 depending on the retailer and it is as bulletproof as you can get for a beginner setup. I have a couple that I use with my nieces because they're relatively inexpensive and they're very durable. 6'6" Medium power rod is a good all around beginner combo. Maybe something a little smaller for the kiddo, like 5'6" or 6'.

The Zebco 33 combo might be one to check out as well. It's in the $30 range but provides much more reliability than the sub-$20 options that are out there. The Zebco 33 itself has a long established reputation too; It's a very well known rod combo. It's available in a few different reel, rod size, and color options. Spincast reels are often times easier to use for kids opposed to spinning reels, which have a little steeper learning curve.

For kids, they're thrilled by catching anything! It's awesome. Only need a simple setup too: rod/reel combo, line, bobber, sinkers, hooks, and bait.

• 8-10lb mono filament line
• small "baitholder" hooks or "Aberdeen" hooks
• small split shot sinkers
• small worms like trout worms or red wigglers.
• bobber

That will catch anything in the pond. 🎣

I love my Ugly Stik. When we moved over here that is the one pole I brought with me. I sold the rest. I have never broken one and they are very sensitive.

Hey vivi

I'm sure no expert fisherman, but I'll happily tell you what I'm using, where I got it, etc...
For panfish (shellcracker, bream, pumpkin seed, red ear, crappie(s), etc...), and up to sh-medium size bass both large & small mouth, all the trout I've been catching, and even some "eating size" channel cats it's been working very well for me.

It is a cork handled one piece ultra-lite rod/reel combo. Shakespeark Micro Spin or Micro Series 4' 6 inch rod & reel combo. The reel comes spooled with 4lb Stren monofilament on it.
I set my drag to let the line out before the line breaks and have had no issues at all.
They run ~ $19 to $20 at Walmart. The open face spinning reel that comes on it is a forest green color.
So one piece Shakespear 4' 6" cork handle ultra lite rod, and Shakespear forest green open face ultra lite open face spinning reel.

You could always pull the 4lb mono that comes on it, and re-spool with 4lb diameter but 15lb test Spyderwire braid line. That'd take quite a bit to break; especially if the drag is set right, and the reel and rod will handle it just fine.

You can sure pay more and maybe get more. You'll easily get it done with that Shakespear Microspin/Micro Series rod/reel combo. It easily fits into my Rav as well.

For bigger stuff I'll get bigger rod/reel. For the vast majority of what I do, this gets it done.
I'll also say that the Ugly Stick rods are good to go. I've used them for decades, and had only good experiences.

Take them bream/bluegill fishing initially because with kids it’s all about catching to keep them interested…I suggest going to Walmart and getting this:

Zebco 33 Micro Cork Spinning Combo
Trilene XL Smooth Casting 6lb. Monofilament line
Size 6 Eagle Claw Aberdeen hooks
BB Split Shot weights
Cylindrical bobbers
Live crickets
Stringer
Catcherman

Good Luck! 🍀 🎣

Went up to Big Island VA last Friday - slept under my tarp surrounded by mountains and serenaded by owls and coyotes with a big'ole smile on my face

Image

Took a start/finish line pre-run photo the morning before the start

Image

Did the run (3/22) Fantastic time!, came back [to the beach] same afternoon.
Went fishing Sunday (3/23) and caught - what I think is my first Brookie? (~13") - my dinner for the evening. Could've been a pale/almost albino Brown? Was sure delicious either way.
Grate Days for sure!!

Image

FFG LC200N PacSalt was in my pocket Friday & Saturday, Mili2 15V on Sunday and since

Nice. Thank you SaltyCaribbeanDly for letting me know. That makes that one my first ever caught (heck, even seen) Brook Trout.
I - of course - lol, ate it that night & can report that they taste a lot like Browns and are quite yummy.

I went out again this morning to try my luck, and luck was with me again :-)
Caught my 2nd ever Brookie, a small throw back Rainbow, and my first two Channel Cats of the year. One Channel about 16", the other around 13". The Brookie was around 13"-14". 'Bow was put back in the water.

Second Brookie ever
and mid-flop below, lol

Small 'Bow

This Channel hit it (my bait) like a moped!

and the second Channel Cat

The Mili2 15V in pocket, and photos.
FFG PacSalt LC200N will be with me for my Sunday-Runday-Funday mañana =-] as per my normal

I went out again this a.m. had a bit of luck again,

Image

That one big one there was ~30 inches and fought both long, and hard.
Do bear in mind that the rod/reel is a UltraLight set up. You'll see the fishes head is three or four times larger than just the tiny ultralight spinning reel; and that it looks like it was just about too big for the net, because it was.
I fought/played that fish for a surprisingly long time before being able to land it. How the hook didn't straighten or come out, or the line didn't break is a mystery. I was expecting any of those things to happen the entire time until I netted it, which took a while.

The big one was catch and release, so it's swimming languidly right back where it was. I drew attention hooking, fighting and landing that fish. I was quite, but it was an event and it took a while, lol.
I had no idea this type of fish was in that water, or that there were fish that big in that small body of water. Now I know...

Image

Also three more Channels and another Rainbow. Ranging from ~12 inches to ~16 inches.
Big Strong Carp put right back into the water and swam away.
Channels and Rainbow kept to be eaten =-]

For sure that big ole' Carp was one heck of a fight and you couldn't wipe the wonder & smile off my face for hours after I landed that thing.
Grateful as always...

I've got another ultra next weekend too. This one in Appomattox/Gladstone. Maybe no fishing next weekend as a result.

I hooked into something much bigger and stronger than the ~30" carp I hooked, and landed Friday. This time though it straightened the hook, and I never saw it. I can say I was unable to slow it or turn it. It just went and there was nothing I could do about it.

Still the 15V BBB Mili2 in pocket.

Still haven't gotten around to supplying up...been real busy at work.

Gonna pick some gear up this weekend though. Going to spend 3 days 2 nights camping in the wilderness and want to try to catch something to eat while I'm out.

Thanks again for the suggestions. I'll report back if my catcherman ends up getting used on anything.

You cannot go wrong with a Bream Buster (telescoping cane pole) a cork/bobber and some crickets. I have taken my sons who are now Juniors in high school to city park ponds and catch and release a ton of bream. Would not eat them due to being neighborhood runoff. But we have fun and rarely do I have one we can’t get the hook out of, meaning it dies. Drop that cork out in 3-8 feet of water with one lead sinker and fun you will have. Pro tip- take an expendable towel and in the car alcohol hand sanitizer as bream are very smelly fish
