Case trapper

Post by RugerNurse »

I keep coming back to this design. I like the look and the blade shape and overall size. How is Case quality nowadays? I hear multiple opinions. DLT has a nice Micarta handle single blade one

Hit or miss. I bought a bone handled wharncliffe Copperlock that had a burnt tip and a sizeable gap between liner and backspring. Then the yellow Delrin small wharncliffe Trapper I bought to replace it was half the price and flawless.

I went on a Case splurge last year. All have problems but some are perfect in one way or another. I guess it depends on what you’re okay with in a traditional knife. I’m a big fan of the mini trapper pattern and got three last year. One is pretty much flawless, one has scales that don’t fit to the bolsters, and one is a mess. None of them have pointy tips, Case does not like sending knives out with any form of tip. Ended up finding a nice Queen from the 70’s that filled that traditional niche for me.

If you’re looking at Case I recommend looking for vintage examples. There’s some good finds from the 60s and 70s

You might want to check out the made in Germany (not China) trapper models from Boker.

German Eye brand trappers are nice. Hen and Rooster used to be, but I haven't kept up with them in thirty years.

Trapper pattern is too big for a slipjoint IMO. Might as well have a clip. Peanut, small stockman, and Barlow are as big as I would carry in a slip any bigger needs a pocket clip (and a lock).

Case has introduced the Sodbuster and Sodbuster Jr. in S35VN at the same price as a regular stainless Sodbuster with bone scales. I am hoping this will bleed over into their other models, as well.

What vendors have you all purchased from that you would recommend? I see Deadwood (deadwoodknives.com) and Shepherd Hills Cutlery (casexx.com) and Case Knife Outlet (caseknifeoutlet.com). Are the three mentioned good-to-go? What others are out there? Thanks!

For traditionals, Case & GEC, I like
Deadwood
Collector Knives
Knife Center

I have not been pleased with the quality of the newer Case knives of years late. I also prefer carbon steel (CV) to their surgical stainless and of late most of the lineup and new models are trending to the latter. For me, GEC has been making better quality traditionals in the last decade at least.

I've used Shepherd of the Hills and Knifeworks.com for Case knives.

BTW, there are S35VN trappers out there if you can find them.

More than happy to help. Enjoy. If you run across any seahorse whittler models forward me to the site please. This and the Case wharncliffe models are really all that ever catch my attention now. Maybe the occasion Tony Bose.

Those are both great models. I've had my eye on a certain seahorse whittler for a while. Damascus steel. More blades to show off the fancy metal :hugging-face

Deadwood Knives has the best price at about $70 less than the nearest competitor.

Shepherd Hills has a damascus 2-blade mini trapper with wharncliffe & clip blades:

and a single blade yellow delrin mini trapper:

Here’s one I sent back to Glen Brooks in Tennessee to have the back springs and blades replaced. Due to its smaller size back 85-105 years ago Case didn’t have parts to restore it.

It was just a tool for someone to use. It had black paint on the scales and there was still brown epoxy on the blades and on the back springs. (I think that’s why one of them broke.)
