I actually started that while sitting in line for the Seconds Sale one year. Spent most of my whittling time for almost a year getting it done.Pokey wrote: ↑Mon Feb 10, 2025 7:02 pmHad some time on your hands. I’ve picked a few very nice knives with badly abused edges for dirt cheap. If you know how to sharpen and are okay with removing some metal, there’s some deals to be had.

That might be kind of fun just to see how well one could try to revive it.... But not at that price...
Wow, yablanowitz, that's incredible! Almost thought that was a turnbuckle on it at first glance, but appears to be some sort of floating piece whittled to be captured inside?

Going back to Caly.

I saw that on ebay. I looked closer to see because of the nice price...

Re: Crimes against a beautiful knife...
It's a cylinder in a cage. There wasn't room between the bars to get the Nilakka blade in to carve a ball or two, so I left it as a cylinder.SpeedHoles wrote: ↑Mon Feb 10, 2025 8:24 pmThat might be kind of fun just to see how well one could try to revive it.... But not at that price...

Re: Crimes against a beautiful knife...
If it were significantly cheaper I'd buy it and convex the whole blade. I know, kind of sacrilege compared to what it originally was, but like I mentioned before these knives are really close to being a stout user and with a less delicate edge you could really lean on it.

Re: Crimes against a beautiful knife...
Those Nikkala’s are very unique looking and no doubt a very performance orientated BTE thickness.
It would be interesting to know how one would perform in a high-alloy toolsteel compared to the original S30v in terms of edge stability.

Re: Crimes against a beautiful knife...
In their initial form, the *literal* ZERO grind meant that they had no thickness behind the edge, excepting the angle of the primary bevel. Even with a secondary bevel added for strength, the Nilakka is in the same realm with blades like the GB1 in terms of thickness immediately BTE.
I like @Evil D 's idea of taking the apex back and then convex/appleseed grinding it, in practice it should be very close to a true zero grind in real world performance, especially if the length of the convex bevel is fairly long (comparatively).

Re: Crimes against a beautiful knife...
I don't recall the GB1 having a particularly low BTE thickness. Mine was pretty similar to the GB2 which is quite average. Both were straight from factory, so not a question of being used up

Sorry, I didn't see this earlier. It was a paint roller extension handle.awa54 wrote: ↑Mon Feb 10, 2025 7:45 pmyablanowitz wrote: ↑Mon Feb 10, 2025 6:08 pmNo, I sharpened it out and I'm still using it. In fact, I did most of this with it.

Well then, I see that not only do you have a sharp knife at hand, but plenty of skill and patience to go with it!
Very cool!!
Was that originally a broom or mop handle?
Re: Crimes against a beautiful knife...
Lil Nikkala was one I wish I'd picked up.

It was one of the first ones I bought that really went against the norm from what I typically buy and I never regretted it. It's one of the more unique ones I have.

Re: Crimes against a beautiful knife...
I probably need to tack up pix of my Smock over here after all the chewing of two teeth on the flipping tab. Heck I can't even clean them up and square them as the blade is harder than any file I have lol.
The teeth are chewed in rough and I have nothing to clean them up lol. They work amazingly well though and I am ok with that... but it's a crime what I have done to my Smock... it's a Frankin'Smock...

Re: Crimes against a beautiful knife...
My example is 0.37mm BTE, which means that only a few smaller blades in my Spydie collection are thinner (Chap, Urban, Manbug), I always wondered why that blade grind was in such a beast of a handle...
and yes, the Nilakka is thinner BTE even with the secondary bevel.

Here are the crimes against my Smock I did. They work really well too, but compared to the rest of this little knife, they are a crime what I did...

If it works the way you want...not guilty.
Re: Crimes against a beautiful knife...
Extra jimping is never a crime. Case dismissed.
