Spyderco Angle Gauge

#1

Post by paladin »

A few questions about the Spyderco Angle Gauge:
1. When were they made?
2. How many were made?
3. How much did they sell for originally?
4. Do they ever show up on the secondary market?
( I haven't ever seen any for sale on auction sites)
Thanks in advance to anyone who tries to help educate me on this topic!!!

Dang. I wonder why they made so few. They had to know they would sell out fast.

It was just a test to see how useful they were and what kind of user response they'd get.
sal wrote:Please try to keep in mind that this is a test. I would like to know if the tool is effective for you in determining the edge angle. Perhaps another thread on the Spyderco general forum for discussion and sharing of info? We're trying to decide if we should make them. Making them as a regular item is more complex than this test is so any info will help us.

I've occasionally looked for one here and there over the past decade. Barely anyone remembers they were even made...

Any chance we could see this, or similar, return as a normal production item in the lineup?

Hey Speedholes,

Way to resurrect an old thread. ;)

What would be the "purpose" of creating a new version? The piece would be cost prohibitive as originally made? I don't even remember the name of the guy that came up with the original ideas. I think he was in Europe. Sticking the blade of a knife in the slot and looking closely with the tip of the knife so close to your eye presented a liability issue. That's why the guard and instructions. I think the concept would have to be refined to be safer and effective?

Part of it I think is that it just looks cool and it seems like it would be effective. I know I would not mind picking one up.

To make it safer:

Is it even possible to put a little abrasive on the inside of the angles? If so, the user can put some marker on the blade edge, drag it through the angle a bit and you could see where the marker comes off.

Just an idea off the top of my head.

Different idea:

Feel like I would need to draw this….

Place two semi circles (one coins with a 90° cut out, the other cut in half) on top of each other. Pivot in the center, possibly spring loaded. You would push the knife into the opening to read the angle. You would just need to find a way to clear the apex of the knife edge.

Like I said, had to draw it, almost as good as a CAD, after all it’s 5:30am waiting to take my sone to wrestling practice.

If you can't wait for a remake of the original, perhaps the Veritas Bevel Guage would suffice in the interim. It is specifically for blade geometry when sharpening, though usually for tools other than knives. Perhaps it would work for knives as well.

Haha, yep it was a deep dive!
Like I said, it's been a thought of mine that pops up in the back of my mind over the years as an, "ohhhh yeah whatever happened to that thing...?"

If I'm being honest it's more of a novelty cool discussion piece than an actual tool I have a need for. Just that it has a semi unique function, and of course, tied to my favorite particle separator brand.
I'm personally not a big fan of "poker chip", or custom coin, type decoration pieces to carry around. But small usable tools or keychains with an actual viable function tied to it do appeal to me. Usually when I sharpen I don't actually measure out the specific number, more so just go at it until it's all uniform... But it might be cool to check occasionally on a gauge.
I get the potential liability thing, but that's just gotta simply be a big constant no matter what with simply selling and making knives, no?

Maybe add a small LED light to one side of it (could also then be marketed as a pocket flashlight tool) but with this you could more more easily see if there's a gap/void between the blade and the gauge, with backlighting, and people could be less likely to try to get their eyeball as close to it.

Hi Speedholes, I have one but it's not getting much use. It works well on scandi blades.
If you PM me your address, I'll send it to you if you want it.
