Stretch 2 XL LW salt in Magnacut?

#1

Post by Kleon »

Are there any plans on a full flat ground Stretch 2 XL LW Salt in Magnacut or LC200N?

Sometimes it’s hard to keep up with all the models and plans. I enjoy my serrated H2 variant a lot and feel there is a definite place for this model in a Magnacut Salt variation.

I did see an email today, or yesterday, from a Knife Dealer I Subscribe to. Mentioning a Sale they were having on some Spyderco knives that were being discontinued. One of them was a Spyderco Salt 2 Folding Knife Green FRN Handle with LC200N, and another one was Spyderco Waterway Fixed Blade Knife Black G10 Handle with LC200N Plain Edge FB43GP. Maybe Spyderco is phasing out LC200N, or I read the email incorrectly?

I don't have a dog in this fight, as LC200N is not for me.

Then add to that, with there possibly being a pause in MagnaCut steel production. Maybe Spyderco will keep ties with LC200N, until this Crucible Industries thing gets all sorted out?

What kind of update can you share about this with us, Sal? :thinking

Also, while I have your attention here for a moment, Sal. Have you, along with some other knife making companies, like Benchmade, Hinderer, Cold Steel, Chris Reeve gotten together on a conference call in the past couple of months, to hash out the possibility of pooling together and purchasing Crucible Industries, by chance?

Thanks Sal. I appreciate the variants you have released over the last two years a lot.

Personally, I would prefer more hollow grinds. I much prefer a full hollow grind over all others. I made far more full hollow grinds than any other type/style. I have not been convinced that a full flat has any advantages over a full hollow grind. You have the same behind the edge thickness, if you grind it that way. From a manufacturing standpoint you could argue that flat grinds are easier/cheaper to produce, I suppose.

Probably why my stretch 2 XL H2 serrated Salt, is my most carried lately…. it’s extremely light for its blade length too, which plays a roll as well.
Whatever turns you on, cupcake.
Still plays with knives…

Hi Kleon,

No immediate plans.

That's a real shame, especially as IIRC one of the reasons for designing the Stretch 2 XL without liners was to make it easier to 'saltify' in the future.

I really hope these lack of plans don't extend to the rest of the Seki Salts, particularly the Salt 2 which would be an awesome general purpose outdoors knife in PE Magnacut.

I don't think any Seki knife in Magnacut has been announced, wonder if it will ever. Maybe it makes business sense to sell a ton of the USA knives to those who have been pent up waiting for some spydies in magnacut...just a guess. New reveal just announced the G10 magnacut Salt millies and manixes which will be a huge hit. Meanwhile they just announced four production Spy27 Seki knives.

Yes I could see the MC Military and Manix models doing really well, even to the point of eclipsing their standard steels (if prices are comparable).

Conversely if you want MagnaCut but don't like choils then Spyderco has nothing to offer. Think I'll probably go Hogue for my next purchase.

Sal has said elsewhere that Magnacut will likely end up in the Seki line eventually, so don’t lose hope.

I take it as a good sign for Magnacut that the Spy27 models are being introduced - Spy 27 came out before Magnacut so presumably Magnacut is somewhere behind Spy 27 in the queue.

I might be totally wrong, too, that’s just my guess. 🙂

You're absolutely right - 22 months ago Sal said this:

I'm sure MC will get to Seki.

Fingers crossed you're right that MagnaCut is coming :crossed-fingers but given the delay and subsequent uncertainty around Crucible I'm not hopeful.
