Re: Random: General Spydie Chat
My personal feelings on spyderco, and to kinda sum it up short, things have changed in the last decade or so. I miss the days of dinosaur bone kiwis, black micarta calypsos, Ed shempp Persians, titanium ATR’s, crickets, kopas, dragonflies. spyderco’s knife career is quite beautiful and artistic when you really take a close look. And in my opinion that’s why they will forever be greatest knife company of all time, at the very least, in our respected region of western America. I think spyderco still makes great knives, fundamentally for their ergonomics, reputation, commitment to quality. but to put it bluntly, their trajectory lately hasn’t been exceptional (at least compared to how it once was) in regards to new designs or renurturing old discontinued designs that hardcore afi’s would would love back. There’s been new designs or releases here and there that have caught my interest, but still nothing I think to my self that i need to own for my tastes, at least for the most part. Some general reasons why I don’t think they’re producing as interesting of knives any more: capitalism, in the age we live in now, spyderco more seems to be a company trying to get by in these trying times and not taking much risks like they used to on designs, and I think they’re more listening to what the general mass public are interested in, steel flavors and color ways, slight modifications of already existing designs.. ie bodacious, military 2. Which I get it, but I’ve never believed the general mass public knows best when it comes to most things except for business. And the next thing I think is possibly sal not being as much of the “spear-header” of the company that he was. Of course that’s just life and bound to happen as with age, but it is an unfortunate event as I’m sure we all know. I love Sal and believe the man is an absolute legend, for his humbleness, wiseness, and just absolute pure talent of a knife designer, So I will always remain grateful for spyderco. Maybe it’s just a lull for me right now in regards to my tastes and who knows maybe they’ll go back to the style of knives that I like, but I know it won’t ever be like how it was in the 90s-early 2000s spyderco, a time where most things were better in many other realms of life, art, media, and companies. I’ve rambled on long enough

Re: Random: General Spydie Chat
sounds like you should just take a break man.
spyderco makes a lot of stuff I don't care for. I'd say 90% of their catalog is stuff I wouldn't buy for myself, and that's a conservative estimate.
And that's 100% ok. Spyderco doesn't need to cater to me to survive.
I try out the models that interest me. Sometimes knives I expect to like don't really do anything (sold all my stretch xl's off, for example). Sometimes I find a new favorite (Chief, military 2).
I engage with the forum more when I'm excited for a new release or excited about a recent purchase. Sometimes I don't stop by for months or years when things aren't as exciting to me.
At the end of the day I bet we all have enough knives to get us through the rest of our days. Material goods are cool and all but that bit in that one book about not focusing on storing up earthly treasures that can rust or be stolen is very, very wise advice.

@vivi I’m confused on your advice, you’re saying I should take a break from the forum because I’m not excited for new releases ? Well, Despite not being excited for a lot of new releases lately I still like to visit and occasionally post on this forum, I can still talk about the aspects of spyderco and knives im personally more passionate about. And I agree with your last statement, at the end of the day we are all collectors, if it was all about function and necessity most people here wouldn’t own knives in the double or triple digits. It’s either addiction or passion and love. I was just sharing my thoughts and opinions about spyderco and the changes as I see them because I have a passion for spyderco and my own personal experience. Hopefully you understand now

I completely agree. It seems to me that much of the artistic and creative side of Spyderco is gone, sacrificed to an overwhelming focus on performance and/or economy. So we get a seemingly endless supply of lightweight FRN folders, with a rotating supersteel. None of that is what initially drew me to Spyderco. I liked the interesting designs (and collaborations with custom makers) and visually and tactilely appealing blade shapes and handle materials. Maybe it's just the natural progression of things.Tristan_david2001 wrote: ↑Sun Dec 15, 2024 9:35 amMy personal feelings on spyderco, and to kinda sum it up short, things have changed in the last decade or so. Hi Tristan_david,
Thanx much for your input, and kind words. We always appreciate honest feedback. Finding that balance between what our customers ask for, variations and new stuff has its challenges. Also, we're always refining existing models or bringing out variations, like the new Chaparral "Slipit".
As I look back across the year at; SpydeRench's, Q's, and a multitude of models that have come and gone, as well as the many existing models, the business plan is always in motion. Which is why we appreciate the feedback.

Hindsight is always 20/20. Sometimes it's best to keep your eyes (and mind) open enough to see what there is to like that Spyderco (etc.) still releases. I think as we age, our tastes refine to such a point that we start to see such similarities in all things in life, that we think it's all just the same. This is called being, or becoming, jaded. Nothing wrong with it, but it would suit one best to reapply their focus towards something greater than what once was. What are you going to do now that you've acquired all the knives that you do enjoy? Don't let your lack of current interest be your finish line. Focus and live in the current. One day you'll sit back and appreciate what is now, all the same. Ferris Bueller said it best...

I appreciate you understanding and valuing my feedback Sal. I hope I don’t come off as too close minded as some forum members seem to take me as. I just have a particular taste when it comes to spyderco, and the artistic endeavor of your career has been inspirational to mesal wrote: ↑Sun Dec 15, 2024 1:13 pmHi Tristan_david,

Hi Tristan_david,
No problem on my end. I keep an open mind (drafty brain) as much as possible. Glad to inspire. We try to do that. That's why we share each other's thoughts.
We always try to encourage others to; "go for it".

Re: Random: General Spydie Chat
And that right there is one of the reasons why Spyderco is consistently one of my favorites. What other prominent knife company founder routinely engages with the customers/fans like Sal does? It makes a difference.

it's always a little weird to scroll through socials and see a photo you took that you didn't post.

First of all. Love the Spyderco logo. Second I love that they do that. I don’t have Facebook nor Instagram tho.

Has the Spyderco Forum been slower to load these past days for anyone else, or is it just me as I live in Southeast Asia?
