Pricing question

#1

Post by MASTODONFW16 »

Hi everyone! I've just explored the newest Reveal and I'm quite excited about what we gonna see in the future. DLT has listed prices on those models and I'm curious about pricing. Don't get me wrong, I'm not dumb to complain about them, they've been great ever since I became aware of Spyderco knives (I won't be pointing fingers at other big brands), I'm just really interested.
So, we have a PM3 LT Salt at about 160-163 and 15v for about 152 if I'm not mistaken. However, G-10 15v is 215 and Salt is 198. What's the deal with that? I'd really love to find out, if it's appropriate to ask and disclose.
Thanks Team Spyderco, Thanks Forum!

The Golden LW models are pretty noticeably cheaper to produce in terms of materials. With the Para 3 for example, you have just injection molded FRN plastic instead of G10 (which has to be milled and finished) and only one steel liner and PB washer (on the side where the compression lock bar is). They use the cheaper wire clip on that model instead of the full steel "spoon" clip as well. The Para 3 Salt G-10 in particular has additional surface milling and finishing with the secondary color that will add to the production cost as well.

I was talking about steels. If we look at lightweight models, magnacut seems more expensive than 15v, considering that the internals are 99.9% same. However, we now look at G-10 and and see that it's cheaper than its "brother" in 15v steel. And it has more complex milling, ceramic detent ball. This is what I don't get.

The Para 3 Salt LW is $148.50 these days after the recent price drop, even on DLT when I checked just now. So it's a bit cheaper than the Para 3 15V LW sprint at $153.75. Just an educated guess, but I imagine 15V is probably more expensive than Magnacut, not taking into account their compositions, due to the former being much lower production numbers compared to the latter. Not just for Spyderco, but even across the industry. Dozens if not hundreds of companies are using Magnacut for knives, yet Spyderco to my knowledge is the only company making (limited for now?) production knives in 15V. Search the interweb for "15V knife" and the results are basically all about Spyderco's models, yet do the same for Magnacut and you'll find a bunch of other companies included.

Small runs of anything are always more expensive for manufacturing companies to make compared to high volume production runs because of economies of scale and all that.

Yeah, it seems Spyderco lowered the prices on certain models, including magna Pm3 LT. Now it makes perfect sense , thanks
