I guess some people would rather drive a Toyota Corolla than a Corvette.

If we're playing the analogy game, I think I'd rather drive a tuned but still reliable GR Corolla, with ~350-400hp and all wheel drive it'll be plenty of fun and more practical than daily driving a Corvette.

But this is also assuming we can only own one car and so then only one steel, when most of us own many. What I don't need is a whole garage full of only Corvettes or only Corollas, I want a variety because they all have their pros and cons. I also need a 4x4 truck somewhere in the mix, and maybe even a boat.

That's 100% me -- I'd rather rock a VG10 Delica than something like a $1k Olamic. To each their own, of course. ;)

My current "toy" is a Honda Sport 2000, '07, 6 speed.

Had to give up my "crotch Rockets" when I turned 65, so I went back to cars.

The S2000 might be the greatest road going vehicle that Honda ever made besides the original NSX, it still baffles me that they stopped making it.

That saying "if I won the lottery I wouldn't tell anyone, but there would be signs" well for me one of the first things I'd probably buy is a '90s NSX lol.
The 90's NSX was an amazing car for it's time, if I hit the lotto, I have other cars in mind.

Always said the first car would be a Lambo.

Great car as long as you keep the gas tank full, the handling gets wild when they're low on gas because of the difference in weight, the gas tank is up front.

I tend to find more people feeling the need to say that one does not need anything more than some 440 or similar steel, than others saying one has to have Maxamet or Rex121. This is something I find in most hobby forums, many believe the past was all one needs and everything new is just hype and an expensive unnecessarily waste.
As to cars until recently i always enjoyed having both extreme in the driveway, some fast play toy and a built 4X4, I like choice depending on the planed activity. Same goes for my knife collection.

Absolutely, I like to nerd out on different types of steel, but certainly don't expect others to share my passion for super steel. Variety of opinions is what makes life intersting.

Good point. Gotta have variety!

Great thoughts here. Yes some time back there was another guy who I chatted with, he showed me his folder which he was very proud of. A black coated part serrated "Gas Station Special" as some call them with "Surgical Steel" etched into the blade. To each their own on these things as you pointed out. But I told him he could afford [and he definitely could] a good reliable brand. I suggested a Spyderco Endura or similiar. He told me I'm "too addicted to knives' so I changed to a different conversation topic.

There are worse addictions than knives! :') Kitchen knives are the most difficult for me to resist since they get used so often. It helps that I don't have enough money to do much more than daydream most of the time.

Thank you Halfneck. This helps. Yes I had planned to tell him that a whole bunch of very experienced knife owners refute that ckaim of his. You are very perceptive, sir. But as you showed, I realized best to avoid an argument and be respectful and helpful instead. He seems to think stuff like MagnaCut, H1 and VG10 are just expensive jewelry like steel and what matters most is a quality budget steel that can hold an edge and be easy to maintain.

Honestly, I got by using a 2" blade gentlemans' lockback (3OT) with Schrade+ steel as a work knife for years. Internet lore says that steel is 440A with Schrade's own HT. AUS8 isn't a bad all-around steel either... there really is something to be said for "good enough" steels that are easily resharpened and affordable.

That doesn't mean that I prefer those steels, or want to go back to the days before I owned a knife with a more advanced blade steel.

I also struggled with sharpening my first VG-10 knife on an Arkansas stone, but that all ended when I got my first diamond hone. If you want to nudge this person toward the wide world of modern blade steel, then getting them to use a diamond sharpener is an essential first step.

FWIW, CruWear and MagnaCut are among my favorites (super or not), since they both blend strong performance in all parameters and both are very easy to sharpen with the right tools.

...good luck!

If someone doubts that steels characterized as “super” are better than non-“super” steels in certain respects, I walk away.

These “super” steels speak for themselves to anyone curious enough about them. Ask me how I know.

I think VG10 was a great steel. Ask me how I know.
